The Conscious Universe written by Dean Radin and has been published by Harper Collins this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-10-26 with Self-Help categories.

This myth-shattering book explains the evidence for the veracity of psychic phenomena, uniting the teachings of mystics, the theories of quantum physics, and the latest in high-tech experiments. With painstaking research and deft, engaging prose, Radin dispels the misinformation and superstition that have clouded the understanding of scientists and laypeople alike concerning a host of fascinating oddities. Psychokinesis, remote viewing, prayer, jinxes, and more--all are real, all have been scientifically proven, and the proof is in this book. Radin draws from his own work at Princeton, Stanford Research Institute, and Fortune 500 companies, as well as his research for the U.S. government, to demonstrate the surprising extent to which the truth of psi has already been tacitly acknowledged and exploited. The Conscious Universe also sifts the data for tantalizing hints of how mind and matter are linked. Finally, Radin takes a bold look ahead, to the inevitable social, economic, academic, and spiritual consequences of the mass realization that mind and matter can influence each other without having physical contact.

Roald Dahl's 'BFG' caught dreams with a net and trapped them in bottles. Lucky him: the rest of us make do with remembering snippets and trying to make sense of them. J. W. Dunne tried to close the gap in our understanding with the groundbreaking 'An Experiment with Time'. First, he described his own precognitive dreams and concluded that they foresaw our individual experiences to come. Then he puts together an extraordinary theory about how we are all able to see into the future. Throw in deja vu and life after death and you have a real headspin of a book that is perfect for fans of Stephen Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time'. John William Dunne (1875-1949) was a British philosopher, author, aeronautical engineer and soldier. After fighting in the Boer War, he became an aircraft designer, pioneering the first certified stable plane. He also invented a new way to practise dry fly fishing before developing an interest in speculative philosophy. He came up with the theory of Serialism, which he expounded in a series of five books, beginning with 'An Experiment with Time'.

Not illustrated. 1896 edition. Excerpt: ... DOUBLE CONSCIOUSNESS IN HEALTH.* The preceding experiments have been made withhysterical 'subjects'. It has seemed to me useful to try if I could obtain analogous results in subjects that are normal--or nearly so, for, of course, the normal type has only an ideal existence. It is certain that, if we succeed in seizing in a healthy individual the least degree of the phenomena of duplication which are so developed in the hysterical, a solid basis will be given to the psychological study of double consciousness; each observer being put in a position to check all the facts advanced. I have made my investigations on five persons, who have been kind enough to submit themselves patiently to very long, very minute, and very monotonous experiments. So that, proceeding from the results obtained and set forth in the foregoing pages, we shall now endeavor to find out whether the phenomena of the duplication of consciousness are to be met with in non-hysterical subjects. * * * The persons on whom I have experimented are two ladies of fifty, a lady of thirty, and two of twentyfive years of age. One lady of fifty is ataxical; the lady of thirty is decidedly anaemic; otherwise, all of them enjoy good health. They have little intellectual culture, are completely ignorant of the aim of the experiments, and know, of course, nothing of researches on double consciousness or the like. I sat with each of them, on an average, six times, for three-quarters of an hour. The phenomena became gradually more marked, and without doubt would become still more so if the treatment were pushed farther. Lately I have attended to the question whether suggestible persons present a narrowing of the field of consciousness, that is to say, a difficultyTn occupying theraselves...

The source of endless speculation and public curiosity, our scientific quest for the origins of human consciousness has expanded along with the technical capabilities of science itself and remains one of the key topics able to fire public as much as academic interest. Yet many problematic issues, identified in this important new book, remain unresolved. Focusing on a series of methodological difficulties swirling around consciousness research, the contributors to this volume suggest that ‘consciousness’ is, in fact, not a wholly viable scientific concept. Supporting this ‘eliminativist‘ stance are assessments of the current theories and methods of consciousness science in their own terms, as well as applications of good scientific practice criteria from the philosophy of science. For example, the work identifies the central problem of the misuse of qualitative difference and dissociation paradigms, often deployed to identify measures of consciousness. It also examines the difficulties that attend the wide range of experimental protocols used to operationalise consciousness—and the implications this has on the findings of integrative approaches across behavioural and neurophysiological research. The work also explores the significant mismatch between the common intuitions about the content of consciousness, that motivate much of the current science, and the actual properties of the neural processes underlying sensory and cognitive phenomena. Even as it makes the negative eliminativist case, the strong empirical grounding in this volume also allows positive characterisations to be made about the products of the current science of consciousness, facilitating a re-identification of target phenomena and valid research questions for the mind sciences.

Scientific Approaches To Consciousness written by Jonathan D. Cohen and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-04 with Psychology categories.

There are many ways to approach the understanding of consciousness. Questions about these ways have occupied philosophers and metaphysicians for centuries. During the early growth of cognitive science the problem of consciousness remained taboo, but an increasing number of studies have either implicitly or explicitly begun to bear on its nature. These have been inspired by a number of different different original questions, and focus on a variety of different empirical phenomena. Thus, studies of implicit memory, subliminal processing, strategic versus automatic processing, allocation of attention, and differences between information processes in the awake versus dreaming state all share a common assumption of a particular quality or state -- awakeness, awareness, alertness, namely consciousness -- that somehow can be distinguished from another type of state or states in which the subject is not aware of the information being processed. What distinguishes the cognitive psychological and cognitive neuroscience approach to the question of consciousness from that of philosophy and metaphysics is scientific methodology: a set of tools that permit the empirical study of a phenomenon in an objective and reproducible way. Recent developments in both the empirical and theoretical methodologies of these fields have made it possible to begin to study the phenomenon associated with -- if not directly underlying -- consciousness in a scientific fashion. This volume tries to resolve the difficulties associated with the scientific investigation of consciousness. The intent is to explore the extent to which consciousness can be the target of direct scientific inquiry, to get on the table some of the relevant work, and consider the degree to which this research can help inform our understanding of consciousness. It brings together a group of cognitive and neuroscientists to share relevant recent research in the fields of cognitive science and neuroscience and to determine whether any new strategies for the scientific pursuit of this question can be developed. A long-term goal is the development of a unified understanding of consciousness, scientific as well as philosophical perspectives. This volume takes the first step toward building the necessary local bridges.

Excerpt from On Double Consciousness: Experimental Psychological Studies It is known that of late years, in France, a great scientific movement has come about in favor of experimental psychology. While the professors of our High Schools and Universities are continuing to teach an antiquated science, whose only method is that of introspection, there has arisen on all sides in the philosophical reviews, and even in journals strictly medical, a body of work in which the investigation of mental phenomena is conducted according to the methods of natural science. Incontestably, the forerunner of this activity in psychological inquiry was M. Taine, who published in 1869 an important treatise upon "The Understanding." With remarkable penetration M. Taine foresaw, to a certain extent, the most important results obtained in recent years. Thus, the entire chapter upon "Images" may still be consulted with profit. The real inaugurator of the psychological movement proper, is M. Ribot. The psychologists of France owe much to M. Ribot.
