[Region\eration asks the designer to undertake an excavation of place, to explore "finding as a creative act," and to provide "fresh purpose" to the collected conditions of context, all of which are cultivated from a local inheritance. Larger than a singular instance, the particularities of this exercise are to serve as a host site to an experiment with a reactive, catalyst-based redevelopment scheme. Regional architecture is a compassion for critically approaching the design process - scaleless, typologically limitless, and fully transferable. The regional architect is devoted to the necessity of maintaining individuality across an increasingly globalized landscape. It would be a great mistake to define regionalism merely as a design strategy. It's a mindset, a measure for responding to the complexities of the design process. The regional practitioner leads under a submissive hat, producing designs that match his or her own talents and views with regard to "an-other" body of particularized parameters. The imagination and ambitions of a cultural sphere are its greatest assets. It was here I believed to find a glimpse into pure products of place, the invaluable bonds I was after. Collecting place, a method of formulating a cultural reading that would drive me into the regional ethic I had imagined, felt beyond worthwhile. This design exploration was approached within a framework of short, charette-like stages; each approached openly but always in reaction to its predecessor. All the while, examining both the regional perspective and the collection of culture as facilitator. My first thought upon the completion of this investigation, simply, this isn't over, but has only begun. Ethics and value systems develop over time, require trial and error, successful outcomes and discouraging results. Regionalism is listening to the landscapes we inherit holistically, reciprocating the grand opportunity to shape "an-other's" everyday environment, the physical forms that contribute to their position within the contemporary global condition.
