Excerpt from The Face of the Earth (Das Antlitz Der Erde), Vol. 1 Dear Professor Sollas, I am extremely gratified by the news that the Clarendon Press intends to do me the honour of issuing an English edition of my book Das Antlitz der Erde, and that this is to appear under an aegis so distinguished as yours. The honour is so much the greater since the first volume had already appeared in 1885, the second in 1888, and the first half of the third in 1901. With the lapse of time so much has been accomplished in the exploration of distant regions, as well as in the more detailed study of countries already known to us, that the reader will meet here and there in the first two volumes with a description already antiquated. In a comprehensive work, however, which is devoted not to the formulation of laws, but to the comparison of observations scattered over the whole earth, and the endeavour to establish connexion and correspondence between them, deficiencies of this kind can never be entirely avoided, certainly not when the advance of knowledge is so rapid as at present. A criticism of previous views must in addition be the natural result of this method. Now, however, you must permit me to say a little more concerning myself than would under other circumstances be consistent with the laws of modesty. In the year 1849 my geological investigations began in the Archaean and Silurian districts of Bohemia; in 1850 I proceeded to the Alps; and in 1851 I was commissioned to make a section across the Dachstein mountains, one of the lofty masses of Trias limestone in the eastern Alps. The contrast to Bohemia, with its vast rounded masses of gneiss and horizontal sheets of Quader sandstone, was particularly striking. In 1854 I became acquainted in Switzerland with Bernhard Studer and Arnold Escher von der Linth. Escher with all his simplicity was a remarkable man. Ferdinand Von Richthofen has shown that throughout the whole of northern China, from the lava-fields of Mongolia to the valley of the Wei, and even as far as the Hoang-ho near Hsi-ngan-fu, undisturbed Cambrian sediments rest unconformably upon folded Archaean rocks (II, p. 185). This region also comprises Shan-tung and Liun-tung, and, so far as existing observations extend, Korea as well. This feature is so remarkable that, in spite of the divergent strike, which prevails from the spring of Ikhe-ude to the south-east of Mongolia, the question might be raised whether the ancient vertex does not reappear in this region. To this question the answer is furnished by F. von Richthofen. To the east, in Shan-tung and Lian-tung, the strike of the most ancient granites and primitive gneisses is constantly north-north-west, and is therefore not one of the directions of the vertex. On the other hand, in the regions off north Tshili and north Shansi, lying near the Gobi, where the most ancient rocks are represented by hornblendic gneiss and chloritic gneiss, gentle folding prevails with a strike to the east-north-east2. With regard to the latter region we may certainly ask whether the Baikal wing of the vertex does not actually extend into it. It is certain in any case that the Sinian mole represents a rigid element in the later...
