Excerpt from The Socialist Almanac and Treasury of Facts, 1898, Vol. 1 For the past thirty years the Socialist movement has so deeply affected the intellectual, political and economic life of the German people that a full record of the events connected with its progress in Germany would in itself be an al most complete history of that country during that period. There is no room here for a work of such magnitude, and in the presentation of the subject before us' we must confine ourselves to the statement of a comparatively few facts, deemed the most important. Yet, in justice to some bold pioneers who, ever so utopian in their constructive schemes, should not be forgotten, we may prop erly begin with a brief mention of the earlier German Communists, as they usually styled themselves, or Socialists, as we now term them. Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working-classes, of women, and of the down-trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Excerpt from Appeal Socialist Classics, Vol. 2: The Science of Socialism Whilst, however, the revolution in the conception of Nature could only be made in proportion to the corre sponding positive materials furnished by research, al ready much earlier certain historical facts had occurred which led to a decisive change in the conception of his tory. In 1881, the first working class rising took place in Lyons; between 1838 and 1842, the first national work ing class movement, that of the English Chartists, reached its height. The class struggle between prole tariat and bourgeoisie came to the front in the history of the most advanced countries in Europe, in proportion to the development, upon the one hand, of modern industry, upon the other, of the newly acquired political suprem acy of the bourgeoisie. Facts more and more strenuously gave the lie to the teachings of bourgeois economy as to the identity of the interests of capital and labor, as to the universal harmony and universal prosperity that would be the consequence of unbridled competition. All these things could no longer be ignored, any more than the French and English Socialism, which was their theoretical, though very imperfect, expression. But the old idealist conception of history, which was not yet dis lodged, knew nothing Of class struggles based upon eco nomic interests, knew nothing of economic interests; pro duction and all economic relations appeared in it only as incidental, subordinate elements in the history of civiliza tion. The Case For Socialism Classic Reprint written by Fred Henderson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-06-29 with Political Science categories.

Excerpt from The Case for Socialism One of the most remarkable and hopeful aspects of the present great revival of Socialism, and one of the earnests of its ultimate triumph, is the sudden multitude of capable workers it has called into activity. The older movement in the "eighties" had only a few spokesmen and writers; now one can scarcely take up a local newspaper without finding evidence of capable exponents. Socialism, it is scarcely too much to say, has given men souls, has created minds; never was there a movement so independent of its leaders, so sure to produce men at its need. Here, for instance, is Mr. Henderson, with this admirable tract of his. I know he will forgive my confessing that I had never heard of him until my friend Mr. Gerald Gould called my attention to his manuscript. And here it is, closely and clearly reasoned, persuasive, plain, and easy. Let the reader compare it with Mr. Arnold Forster's recent ridiculous attack upon the Socialist position - or rather, I should say, his recent misunderstanding and misstatement of the Socialist position. Let the reader put it thoughtfully beside the utterance of any contemporary anti-Socialist, except, let us say, Mr. Mallock. There is no gainsaying its superior grip, its force, its conviction. It is one more good weapon for the propaganda of the most inspiring movement, the best-equipped movement intellectually, that the world has ever seen. Excerpt from The Larger Aspects of Socialism Socialism can be approached equally well from two opposite directions. It may be treated either as a social movement that aims to build up a new civilization, or as a new civilization that is gradually being embodied in a social movement. In my "Socialism As It Is" I followed the first method and discussed the economic and political features of Socialism exclusively; in the present volume I shall proceed in the reverse direction and deal exclusively with its larger aspects, its intellectual and spiritual side. As the two books were conceived and written together, they are parts of a single whole; but they are built on entirely independent foundations. In dealing with the economic and political movement I followed the inductive method; taking the activities of the movement itself as my point of departure, I concluded with its generalizations. In discussing the cultural movement I have followed the deductive method. Taking as my point of departure the philosophy of modern science, which I show to be wholly Socialistic in its bearings, and wholly dependent upon Socialism for its practical applications, I have first shown what results are reached by approaching each of the subjects I have discussed from this new standpoint, and I have then pointed out how the Socialist movement is, as a matter of fact, moving along the same line. Excerpt from Socialism Exposed and Refuted The chief value of this little work is in the fact that it goes to the true sources of socialism, whether considered as a scientific economic theory or as a living social and political movement. There is noth ing second-hand about it. The author did not shrink from the toil of examining the most volumi nous and abstruse works as well as the ephemeral productions Of the daily press and of socialistic ora tory. Socialists themselves give him credit for hav ing interpreted their meaning and their aims more faithfully and accurately than some Of their own followers. Excerpt from A Short Study of State Socialism The limits and purpose of this little book would be exceeded if any attempt were made at a detailed account, either of the origin of Socialism, or of the various forms which it has assumed. To trace the growth of the principles upon which Socialism is founded would involve an examination of historical development and would require a separate volume.* Our concern here is with the fact of Socialism. For the purpose of an intelligent understanding of our subject only a brief historical survey is necessary. After that it will be essential to come to some understanding as to what Socialism precisely is, for at present the word is applied most loosely. Excerpt from The People's Progress: A Study of the Facts of National Wealth, With Some Answers to Socialists This volume is the outcome of a private discussion (1) as to the extent to which the Artisan Class has benefited by the undoubted progress of the people of this country during the last sixty years, and (2) as to the possibility of gain to that class by a Socialistic redistribution of our present national income. Inquiry upon these two questions has resolved itself into an investigation of the Socialist dictum that "the proportion of income received by the Manual Labour Class is very small in comparison with the proportion received by Capital." In the following pages an attempt has been made to define and compare these proportions, and to show, from the point of view of a pronounced Individualist, how fallacious are many of the so-called "facts" brought forward by Socialist writers, in relation not only to the Distribution of Income, but also to the Rewards of Capital.
