The former, they held, was right, the latter was wrong. But many of the most learned and orthodox to-day have abandoned this distinction, ' as being one which is not really true to the evidence of the Gospels. The abandonment of this distinction seems to involve the recognition of what we must call the human personality of our Lord. We cannot find a solution in the idea of two personalities existing side by side, one of them dominant at one moment and the other at another moment; nor yet in the conception of two personalities combined and merged so as to make a third, which is neither one nor the other. But we are more ready than some of our forefathers were to recognize the 'limitation ' of Divine personality and power which is implied in the very idea of Incarnation. We know that different points of view are represented in the New Testament, and we are less satisfied to amalgamate them, dovetailing them all together, to form a single authoritative system of interpretation. Our faith is centred in Jesus as very 'GOD in man', but we desire to give that faith free scope and not to imprison it by presuppositions of our own or any other age. We know that whatever else He was, He was a man. He was fully a man. He had what we mean by a human personality. And our further conviction that He was also ' GOD in man ', the embodiment of the Divine consciousness in man, is not incompatible with the belief that the Divine consciousness was operative in Him solely through His human consciousness, to the full extent to which a human consciousness can serve as its medium.
