Excerpt from The Ferrer Case At about nine in the morning of Tuesday, the rath of October, he was shot. Following the custom of England and of many other countries in the case of a public execution, he was buried in the prison cemetery. Spanish opinion, though hostile to the man, would perhaps have preferred the return of the body to his relatives. There is the summary of the story as it might have been told by any newspaper correspondent who desired to do justice to both sides, to tell the exact truth, and to let his fellow-beings have nothing more than infor mation. There is the story as it would have been told by the agents of our cosmopolitan Press if those agents were free. A man of such and such Opinions, notoriously the leader of such and such a section of Opinion in a particular town, was arrested after a rising in that town, a rising directed against the national Government and having for its object its overthrow. That rising after its first inception was captured and organized in a particular direction. Life was lost, pro perty destroyed, and the lives lost and the property destroyed were those of the man's opponents. He was tried under the full procedure of the laws of his country, witnesses were heard and cross-examined, pleadings for the Crown and for the Defence were delivered, a verdict of guilty was brought in against him and he was duly executed. An especial fuss was made about him because he was a high official in a powerful secret society and was connected with a very important inter national movement. There is the plain truth. Of April, 1911 When they say that the judge of Mataro' prosecuted Fe rrer on coming to the conclusion that there were signs of guilt of the crime of stirring up rebellion and say that he only demanded pesetas bail on remanding him the p son, they say a thing contrary to what appears in the trial itself; because the judge remanded him the prison without bail; the bail of 2.00011esetas only referring te his civil res ponsibility. Is this a significant detail? This gentlemen is an error on their part but with one error, and then with another, and another, there begins to form that fundamental error against which we ought te protest. When they say that it is completely proved by summary of the days previous to July 26th, that Ferrer was not in Bar celona, they pass over the fact that on page 80 of this trial their appears the deposition of inspector Carbonell, who says he saw him on the nights of the 23rd. And 24th. Of July in Bar celona. Yet they say as a positive fact that no one, absolutely no one, said in the trial that Ferrer was there before the 26th, I do not now speak of other days further removed from the 26th, of these I will speak later: I speak of those inmediate to the 26th. Excerpt from Francisco Ferrer: A Tragedy in 5 Acts Julius Tietze, the second son of five children of Abel Tietze, his father, an optometrist, and Yette Tietze, his mother, was born at Riga Russia in October 1880. At the age of six, he was sent to Dr. Immerman's German School, where because of the stairs he had to climb and the corporal punishment there, his parents withdrew him, transferring him to Dr. Miller's Lutheran School on Alexander Street, Riga. Passing three classes there he entered St. Catherine's Academy on Romanoff Street, finishing four classes under Inspector Butursky. In 1890 his father fearing Russian pogroms and desiring to save his children from military service emigrated to New York. Here Julius Tietze attended Grammar School No. 4, Principal DeMilt, and Grammar School No. 25, Principal Pettigrew, graduating from the latter. Attempting but failing to pass twice the entrance examinations to City College, he was apprenticed to Edmund Heinecke, a German exile and nobleman, who kept a watchmaker's shop on lower Houston Street. This he dropped, because of maltreatment by one of the workmen. Thereafter young Tietze tried his hand at florists, bartending, peddling, bookkeeping, dry goods, window dressing, A D.T. messenger, confectioner, reporter, driver, painter, bookbinding, painting, butcher, printing, baking, tinsmith, grocery clerk, but could not catch a fancy nor adopt any of them. Finally he resolved to become a dramatist. Accordingly he began the study of dramatic literature at the New York public libraries for seven years by day, supplementing his studies by attendance at the East Side Evening High School, Principal Hess, and at the Harlem Evening High School, Principal Nicholson, and at the City College Evening Division, President Dugan, entrance to the sixth class of which he now passed with credit. In conjunction to this he passed the N. Y. and N. J. State Regents examinations, covering a wide range of subjects counting toward the teacher's academic certificate, several of them with honor. Vincent Ferrer (1350–1419), a celebrated Dominican preacher from Valencia, was revered as a living saint during his lifetime, receiving papal canonization within fifty years of his death. In The Saint and the Chopped-Up Baby, Laura Ackerman Smoller recounts the fascinating story of how Vincent became the subject of widespread devotion, ranging from the saint’s tomb in Brittany to cult centers in Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and Latin America, where Vincent is still venerated today. Along the way, Smoller traces the long and sometimes contentious process of establishing a stable image of a new saint. Vincent came to be epitomized by a singularly arresting miracle tale in which a mother kills, chops up, and cooks her own baby, only to have the child restored to life by the saint’s intercession. This miracle became a key emblem in the official portrayal of the saint promoted by the papal court and the Dominican order, still haunted by the memory of the Great Schism (1378–1414) that had rent the Catholic Church for nearly forty years. Vincent, however, proved to be a potent religious symbol for others whose agendas did not necessarily align with those of Rome. Whether shoring up the political legitimacy of Breton or Aragonese rulers, proclaiming a new plague saint, or trumpeting their own holiness, individuals imposed their own meanings on the Dominican saint.
