This study of Mexican film director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu explores his role in moving Mexican filmmaking from a traditional nationalist agenda toward a more global focus. In studying the international scope of Iñárritu's influential films Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and Babel, the authors trace common themes such as human suffering and redemption, chance, and accidental encounters. The authors also analyze the director's visual style and his use of multiple characters and a fragmented narrative structure. The book concludes with an interview of Iñárritu that touches on the themes and subject matter of his chief works.

Following the successful formula of previous Phaidon "10x10" titles, this new book in the series will present 100 of the world's most exceptional emerging film directors, selected by internationally prominent festival directors including Frederic Maire/Locarno, Piers Handling & Cameron Bailey/Toronto, Sergio Wolf/Buenos Aires, Wieland Speck/Berlin, Kim Dong-Ho/Pusan, Korea, Marco Muller/Venice, Michel Ouedraogo/Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and Li Cheuk-to/Hong Kong. Arranged alphabetically by film director, the book explores the work of each director through the close analysis of one key film per director featured on 2 spreads, providing the reader with detailed information about each film and its author both in words and pictures, including film stills, on-set photographs, posters, and more. In addition, each festival director-curator will present one seminal film, which has influenced his understanding of contemporary cinema. Each curator will write an essay about the film director and the selected film. For each film, the reader will learn about the plot, the cast, the full credits, the film location, the budget, the release date, the nominations and awards, as well the genesis, the production and post-production elements. Each film will be illustrated by sequences of films stills as well as sketches, location scouting shots and storyboards. Finally, at the end of the book, each curator will select one cultural reference from varying genres and media to illustrate the context in which film directors operate today. The book will include a short biography for each film director and each curator. The result is unique source book, a fresh and up-to-the-minute collection of the best global and regional cinematographic creations in all fictional genre - drama, crime, horror, fantasy, science-fiction - around the world. Criteria for selection: each curator (nominators) will select ten film directors and one long feature film which the director made, produced and distributed in the last five years. Each selected film must be a long feature film and should be his or her first, second or third film.

"Hans-Jürgen Syberberg is an original, the most controversial of all the New German directors and a figure who has long been at the vanguard of the resurgence of experimental filmmaking in his homeland. Syberberg’s most characteristic films examine recent German history: a documentary, for example, about Richard Wagner’s daughter-in-law, who was a close friend of Hitler (The Confessions of Winifred Wagner [1975]). But especially “historical” is his trilogy covering one hundred years of Germany’s past, including, most famously, Hitler—A Film from Germany, also known as Our Hitler (1977). In this film and other works, Syberberg unites fictional narrative and documentary footage in a style that is at once cinematic and theatrical, mystical and magical. Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, the Film Director as Critical Thinker: Essays and Interviews is the first edited book in English devoted to this director’s work, and includes his most important English-language interviews as well as some of the best English-language essays on his work. In sum, this book is a significant contribution not only to the study of Syberberg’s oeuvre, but also to the study of German history and politics in the second half of the twentieth century."

Sergei Eisenstein is arguably the most important single figure in the history of movies. He was certainly the most versatile. The director of the masterpieces Battleship Potemkin and Alexander Nevsky, Eisenstein also wrote ground-breaking essays on film art and taught classes on motion picture production. In this book Eisenstein writes about himself and his films, about film directing and about artists he has worked with. The last chapter is his own drawings and sketches.
