As the world has been reshaped since the 1970s by neoliberalism and globalization, increasing financial abstraction has presented a new political urgency for contemporary writers. Globalized finance, the return to Gilded Age levels of inequality, and the emergence of new technologies pose a similar challenge to the one faced by American social realists a century ago: making the virtualization of capitalism legible within the conventions of the realist novel. In The Financial Imaginary, Alison Shonkwiler reads texts by Richard Powers, Don DeLillo, Jane Smiley, Teddy Wayne, and Mohsin Hamid to examine how fiction confronts the formal and representational mystifications of the economic. As Shonkwiler shows, these contemporary writers navigate the social, moral, and class preoccupations of American “economic fiction” (as shaped by such writers as William Dean Howells, Henry James, Frank Norris, and Theodore Dreiser), even as they probe the novel’s inadequacies to tell the story of an increasingly abstract world system. Drawing a connection from historical and theoretical accounts of financialization to the formal contours of contemporary fiction, The Financial Imaginary examines the persistent yet vexed relationship between financial representation and the demands of literary realism. It argues that the novel is essential to understanding our relation to the mystifications of abstraction past and present.

This dissertation examines the representation of capitalism as an abstract phenomenon in American literature at the beginning and end of the "long" twentieth century. Comparing the two most recent ends-of-century--both notorious for the promotion of "new" economic rules and extremes of wealth redistribution--allows us to chart writers' efforts to find formal strategies adequate to represent changing conditions of economic abstraction. Reading fictions from the period of the American "economic novel" from 1885 to 1912 by William Dean Howells, Henry James, Frank Norris, and Theodore Dreiser, and from contemporary narratives of "late" capitalism from 1998 to 2003 by Don DeLillo, Richard Powers, Jane Smiley, and David Denby, I show how texts from these two turns-of-century pose a question of parallel historical urgency: how to find new ways of seeing forces of capitalism that are thought to exceed conventional narrative powers of representation. The financial imaginary thus invites us to consider the novel's attempts--and its failures--to make late capitalism legible in realist terms. I consider how these texts historicize a particular view of late capital as able to evolve beyond its origins as "real" money and toward new levels of financial immateriality. Exploring the ways in which the representation of capital is reconceived in literature as a problem of historical perception and understanding rather than as an account of a system of material production, I argue that the "financialization" of the novel's imagination--an expansive projection of cause and effect through the abstract terms of the market--is a literary expression of and a response to the market's seeming ability to exceed social control. Just as late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century texts seek to define historically viable modes of financial selfhood, late-twentieth- and early-twenty-first-century texts allow us to track the ways that contemporary narrative returns to the preoccupations of the nineteenth-century economic novel even as it models the inadequacies of such fiction to tell the story of twentieth-century capitalism.

Drawing on a wide range of case studies, Cultures of Financialization argues that, in our age of crisis, the global economy is more invested than ever in culture and the imagination. Imaginary Cities written by Darran Anderson and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-04-06 with Architecture categories.

How can we understand the infinite variety of cities? Darran Anderson seems to exhaust all possibilities in this work of creative nonfiction. Drawing inspiration from Marco Polo and Italo Calvino, Anderson shows that we have much to learn about ourselves by looking not only at the cities we have built, but also at the cities we have imagined. Anderson draws on literature (Gustav Meyrink, Franz Kafka, Jaroslav Hasek, and James Joyce), but he also looks at architectural writings and works by the likes of Bruno Taut and Walter Gropius, Medieval travel memoirs from the Middle East, mid-twentieth-century comic books, Star Trek, mythical lands such as Cockaigne, and the works of Claude Debussy. Anderson sees the visionary architecture dreamed up by architects, artists, philosophers, writers, and citizens as wedded to the egalitarian sense that cities are for everyone. He proves that we must not be locked into the structures that exclude ordinary citizens--that cities evolve and that we can have input. As he says: "If a city can be imagined into being, it can be re-imagined as well.”
