In the Saddle is the touching story of a memorable Civil War unit, and covers the first days of the war, the middle war with its exhausting battles, skirmishes and cavalry raids, and the end of the war with depleted ranks, death and surrender. The unit distinguished itself in battle from the coasts of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, to the pathos and drama of the Atlanta battles, and in harassing Shermans blue hosts on his infamous march of destruction to the sea. The story is told using narratives, military sketches, and letters of members of the 5th Georgia from the teenage boy from the back woods of Georgia who enlisted in 1862 and served for the balance of the war, to the men who were captured and endured life as a Northern prisoner of war, their story is one whose voices call to us from the past. Supplemented with vintage photographs and drawings, In the Saddle offers rich and rewarding reading.

The Georgia 1st Cavalry Battalion was organized with four companies about September 27, 1861. The First Battalion was organized from the First Squadron, Georgia Cavalry and other independent companies some dating from the Revolutionary war era. The battalion was assigned to the Department of Georgia under the command of Brigadier General H. W. MERCER. The Department of Georgia was a division of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and East Florida, under Major General P. G. T. BEAUREGARD. The Battalion was commanded by Lt. Colonel Charles SPALDING. The 1st Battalion served as coastal guards, covering the area from lower South Carolina to the Altamaha River in Georgia, until early 1863. On January 20, 1863, the Battalion was consolidated with the 2nd Cavalry Battalion and designated as the 5th Cavalry Regiment per S. O. # 20, Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. The 5th Georgia Cavalry was assigned to Major General "Fighting Joe" WHEELER'S Cavalry Corps in June of 1864 and fought almost constantly from that time until the end of the war. They participated in the March to Sea and the Carolina's Campaign. This unit participated in the horrid affair at Ebenezer where Sherman's troops pulled the pontoon bridge as hundreds of negroes who were following the army were trying to cross. Hundreds drowned in the stream. Gen, Wheeler mentions in his memoirs that his troops rescued at least 50 that the Yankees had left to drown.

The Fifth Georgia Cavalry was formed with headquarters in Savannah under Special Order No. 20 of the Confederate War Department on January 20, 1863. Prior to this order, the men served as the First and Second Battalions of Georgia Cavalry, providing Coastal and Rural Georgia protection. Together with the Third Battalion (later called the Fourth Georgia Cavalry) they served as the bulk of the area. The Commander was Colonel Robert H. Anderson. He was promoted to Brigadier General and served under Major General Joseph "Fightin' Joe" Wheeler. After the war, Anderson became Savannah's first Chief of Police. A statue stands in Savannah commemorating his service. The Fifth Georgia provided Coastal Protection for Georgia until early 1864. In February of 1864, they dispatched to Florida for the Battle of Ocean Pond or Olustee. After the Confederate victory at Ocean Pond, the Fifth Georgia returned home to assist with the struggle against Union troops in North Georgia. They were engaged at the Battle of Noon Day Church, New Hope Church, Ezra Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Big Shanty, Marietta and The Battle of Atlanta. They saw action at Taylor's Creek, Brown's Mill, McCook's Raid, and Bear Creek Station. After Sherman began his March to the Sea, the Fifth Georgia was a part of Wheeler's Cavalry. After Georgia's destruction, the Fifth Georgia saw action in South Carolina at Broxton's Bridge, River's Bridge, Aiken and throughout the state. The Georgia 1st Cavalry Regiment was essentially gathered from the counties of Meriwether, Floyd, and Lumpkin Counties in the fall of 1861, and organized at Rome, Ga. These men ended up fighting on their own farms and in their own homes as Sherman's troops ransacked northwest Georgia twice, once in the early spring of 1864, and again in the fall as he initiated the March to the Sea. Read the account of O. P. Hargis of Cassville on our werbsite. His farm was just adjacent to where I live a bit northwest of Cartersville. Companies, A, B, and C were organized and mustered into Confederate service on 4 MAR 1862 (28 May 1862). Following early skirmishes in East Tennessee, they took an active part in Bragg's Kentucky Campaign. Later they served in Pegram's Davidson's J. J. Morrison's Iverson's and C. C. Crew's Brigade. They fought at Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, Knoxville, Atlanta, Savannah, and the Carolinas Campaign. They were surrendered with less than 50 officers and men by General Joseph E. Johnston at Durham Station, Orange County, NC on 26 APR 1865.

Smith's Legion was organized during the spring of 1862 with a cavalry and infantry battalion. The roster for Smith's Legion contains 1142 names. For a time the legion was under the command of Colonel Sumner J. Smith. The cavalry battalion was under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John R. Hart and Major Benjamin F. Brown. In the spring of 1863 the battalion merged into the 6th Georgia Cavalry Regiment. Once organized as the 6th Cavalry, five additional companies were added. 1st Company K became Company C of Jessee's Kentucky Cavalry Battalion on June 16, 1863 and 2nd Company K was organized on August 1, 1863. This was a reserve unit to the Georgia 1st Cavalry Battalion, mostly made up of older men and young boys. It saw similar service, but was not merged into the Georgia 5th Cavalry Regiment when it was formed, but was a distinct unit during the March to the Sea and the Carolinas Campaign. The National Archives Index shows 674 names on the roster where the Georgia 1st Cavalry Battalion shows 758. These men were primarily older men and young boys who were "honorably" a part of the 1st Battalion in peace time, but unfit for service when the war came. When the 1864 State Militia census was performed, many of these names appear. ... In 1861 actual hostilities began, & early in the summer all volunteer companies seeing the necessity for active preparation, the Troops went into an encampment at Hester's Bluff, near Sunbury in the month of August [1861] for the purpose of drilling, & doing picket duty on the coast. The reserve units were called out in advance of Sherman's invasion in 1864 and they are named often in the battles around Atlanta, Stoneman's Raid, Griswoldville, Waynesboro, Savannah, and the Carolina's Campaign. Many of these records are quite spotty and the particular units are not identified, but it is clear that they served arduous duty for that last year and a half of the war and they surrendered with Johnston in North Carolina in April, 1865. Companies Of The Georgia 1st Cavalry Battalion Reserves Sifikas states that this battalion consisted of four companies. The men were from the counties of Effingham, Screven, Liberty, Bulloch, Lamar, and McIntosh.
