From the time he was young, Robert Fulton liked to work with his hands. For a while he thought he wanted to be an artist, but it was hard to make a living as a painter. Fulton turned to inventing things, including a very early version of the submarine. He is most famous for building the first practical steamboat. Others had tried and failed, but his North River Steam Boat was successful. It sailed regularly between New York City and Albany, the capital of New York. The success of the North River Steam Boat inspired Fulton to build other steamboats, improving commerce for the nation and the world.

Robert Fulton was the first person to build and operate a successful steam-powered boat for commercial use. Highlighting Fulton's struggles to become a respected inventor and his early work as an artist, this book shows how Fulton's most memorable achievements came as a result of his using his talents to improve upon and perfect the ideas and inventions of others. It also examines Fulton's lesser-known innovations, including his work on perfecting the submarine as a weapon of war.

Excerpt from The Life of Henry Bell: The Practical Introducer of the Steam-Boat Into Great Britain and Ireland; To Which Is Added, an Historical Sketch of Steam Navigation My Lord and Gentlemen, these are my own Wishes for the Queen of the West and may that river, whose charms have been alluded to, be improved by you from year to year in its navigation, with barks, encreasing in size and number, some driven by steam, and others by breeze and canvas, to every nation, tribe, and people, with the fruits of our industry; and bringing back in return the products of distant lands. Free-trade is the philosophy of commerce; and the steam-ship will cut up all monopolies. This was Henry Bell's opinion, and to this it must come. Britain needs this free barter, and she has nothing to dread from the doctrine. So reasoned Adam Smith in his Wealth of Nations, ' and his doctrines will finally triumph. Robert Fulton (1765-1815) was an American engineer and inventor who is widely credited with developing the first commercially successful steamboat. He also designed a new type of steam warship. In 1800 he was commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to design Nautilus, which was the first practical submarine in history. Eli Whitney (1765-1825) was an American inventor best known as the inventor of the cotton gin. This was one of the key inventions of the industrial revolution and shaped the economy of the antebellum South. Whitney's invention made short staple cotton into a profitable crop, which strengthened the economic foundation of slavery. Samuel Finley Breese Morse (1791-1872) was an American painter of portraits and historic scenes, the creator of a single wire telegraph system, and Morse Code. Peter Cooper (1791-1883) was an American industrialist, inventor, philanthropist, and candidate for President of the United States. Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) was an American inventor and businessman who developed many devices that greatly influenced life around the world, including the phonograph and the long-lasting, practical electric light bulb.
