Excerpt from The Foreign Missionary and His Work The conversion of the world is a conquest which makes the highest claims upon faith and demands the noblest qualities of leadership. The author of this book was for years a foreign missionary, a superintendent of missionary work, a member of the Board of Missions, and the leader of the great Sunday school movement of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In devo tion, in faith, in ripe personal experience, and in his unstinted service to the cause of missions he is emi nently qualified to counsel those who are in prepara tion for the foreign field. Excerpt from The Foreign Missionary: His Field and His Work This book embodies the results of about eighteen years of personal experience and observation in the foreign mission field, as well as of much missionary reading and thinking. The works to which the author has been most indebted are, "The Great Commission, or the Christian Church Constituted and Charged to convey the Gospel to the World," by Rev. John Harris, D. D., and "Foreign Missions, their Relations and Claims," by Rev. Rufus Anderson, D. D. The present stage of missionary progress, and the culture of the age, evidently require a more complete and scientific treatment of the missionary scheme, than that to be found in memoirs, or in sketches of particular fields, or in isolated addresses, sermons or appeals. The novelty and romance of missions have passed away. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Foreign Missionary: An Incarnation of a World Movement Europe and America gave last year for their mainte nance, and that of the churches, schools, hospitals, printing presses and other work under their care, The stations and out-stations occupied aggregate The num ber of definitely known adult converts and adherents is already and it is rapidly increasing. An enterprise so vast in itself, representing such a great constituency of intelligent people in Europe and America and recognized by the govern ments of the world as a force of the first magnitude, challenges the attention of all thoughtful persons. The missionary who incarnates this enterprise is therefore a man to be reckoned with in dealing with the phenomena of our age. It is he of whom we instinctively think when the subject is mentioned, he who does the actual missionary work, whose support is the largest single item of missionary expenditure, whose wisdom or folly is the chief human factor in the success or failure Zof the missionary movement and whose character and methods are the objects of the sharpest criticism. Excerpt from The Why and How of Foreign Missions Foreign missions are the realization of the world program of the Church of God, the International mind upon the highest level, and the emancipation of the Church from the pargghial and provincial into the wide spaces of the Kingdom of God. The Church was slow to realize its full mission, but gradually the splendid conception of a world-con quering gospel became clearer. Today the foreign missionary enterprise is the vastest work of the Church, as the facts that are given on other pages. Abundantly prove. Excerpt from Missionary Anecdotes: Being a Collection of Interesting Incidents Illustrative of Work and Life in the Foreign Mission Field The incidents in the missionary enterprise are necessarily many and are generally instructive. In the following pages some of the most important are given, and those especially which have within them a lesson. As will be seen on perusal, they are diverse, cover a large field, and relate to many per sons, countries, and experiences. They are gathered from far too many sources to make it possible for the editor to acknowledge each individually, and have been selected on the most catholic principle. It will be found that all the sections of the Household of Faith are represented. Each anecdote presents, as it were, a complete incident, which brings out one distinct idea, and the whole contents of the volume are calculated to give a general conception of the work, sacrifices, failures, and successes of those, who in answer to the call of their Master have gone forth into all the world to preach the Gospel to every creature. Excerpt from A Call to Personal Labor as a Foreign Missionary It was to a people thus base, and blind, and corrupt, that God said he would send Paui. I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles It is intended to use this por tion of Scripture as a foundation for some remarks in reference to the subject of personal entrance on the work, Of Foreign Missions. The subject is grand, and has a much closer connection with the duty of the church than has been generally supposed. Excerpt from Our Missionary Work From 1853 to 1889 In 1853, the Home, Frontier, and Foreign Missionary Society of the United Brethren in Christ was organized by the General Conference Of the church. This volume contains the history of the work per formed, with results tabulated at the end of each quadrennial term, so far as this could be done, in a statistical form. Some of the statements made, though not regarded as essential to the history, are inserted because they are interesting, and may be useful. Africa -has considerable space given it, for the reason that this is the most important mission of the society. It also did more to awaken missionary zeal in the Church than all others. This large continent, much of which is still in undisturbed heathenism, is now fully Open to missionaries, who should be sent by hundreds to redeem that dark land to Christ. Mr. Stanley, in his march of nine hundred and ninety-nine days from Zanzibar across the continent to the mouth of the Congo River, says that in all the fifty million people in the country through which he passed, not one had heard the gospel. The explorations and death of Livingstone, and the heroic sufferings of Stanley, through which the civilized world has obtained a more perfect knowledge of the sad condition of the people of that dark continent, have awakened much zeal and activity in its behalf. The cruelties endured by thousands of the people of Africa, growing out of the slave-trade, the rum-trafiic, cannibalism, offering human sacrifices, and the many superstitions of the people, as, for instance, witchcraft, should cause Christians to speedily give them the gospel. The history of our mission in Africa, as given in this volume, shows how truly the gospel is the power of God unto salvation; also how wonderfully, not to say miraculously, the Master has led our church in its work there. Our work in Germany, considering the small outlay of money, shows conclusively that God has been with us in the Fatherland. In the new states and territories of the United States, a good work has also been done by the society. In the department of home missions, great strength has been added to the Church, and many precious souls have been saved. As these are not under the control of the parent society. Excerpt from A History of the Foreign Missionary Work, Vol. 1: Of the Protestant Episcopal Church A few words will suffice to apprise the reader of the scope and design of the volume which is here introduced. It embraces all important particulars relating to the Foreign Missionary work of the Protestant Episcopal Church, including all matters of a general character in the Proceedings, Reports, Appeals, and Addresses of the Domestic and Foreign Mission ary Society, in Which, Of course, the Foreign Missionary work had its full share of interest. AS a matter of convenience, moreover, the abstracts Of receipts have been made to embrace those which relate to both departments, Domestic as well as Foreign, and there needs to be added only that part of the history of the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society which relates exclusively to Domestic Missions, to make the history complete in regard to the whole work of the Church in both departments. Excerpt from Love Stories of Great Missionaries What did it mean? Here were two pastors, both highly successful in their work, lost to the foreign field because being a missionary would have interfered with their human affections.
