Excerpt from Managing the Family Forest in the South Many small woodlands are on highly productive sites and are close to good markets. However, the net annual growth on these forested acres reached only 56 percent of their potential growth rate, in 1970. This finding suggests that most land owners are not fully managing their forest resources. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Forest It is a glimpse of the human heart, seen like the blue sea off soundings (which has puzzled, and worse, our landsmen critics) with an ugly and awful fact of human nature ever and anon surging up to the surface, like a monster of the deep, and showing its dark form for a moment in the leaping sun-light, then disappearing to seek its native depths. It makes you dizzy the unsteady motion, the sun dancing in the firmament, the masts describing segments of cir cles in the sky, the good ship heeled over, and almost laid on her beam ends, under the press of her cloud-like canvass, and threatening every moment to take in a flood over her bows, and the sight of these sea monsters sporting in the brine? Yet out of these Visions and per ceptions of nature, (our own abysmal nature in a turmoil, ) and the struggle to maintain the balance of the soul, spring Virtues and a purity of conscience of which the world has but a faint idea. Excerpt from Forestry in the South It is inconceivable that this complex scheme of things we have evolved in building up a new nation should continue in its present paths without the varied and necessary products of the forest. We have come to take these forest products for granted, like water, sun shine and air. Yet in the face of all this, we know that wood is daily becoming more scarce. Excerpt from Trees and How to Know Them: A Manual With Analytical and Dichotomous Keys of the Principal Forest Trees of the South The practical study of trees for many years, together with an effort to instruct others, has led me to prepare the keys offered in this book; they have grown from a few pencil notes relative to the trees in the University grounds and vicinity to a more com prehensive tabulation of the principal forest trees of the Southern States. All the trees of this territory are not included, because an exhaustive list would make the keys so cumbersome as to threaten their practical use. On the other hand they include 'many trees that are not indigenous to the territory. It was thought well to do this because the importation of foreign va rieties for ornamental uses has made desirable a knowledge of their relationship. The South S Fourth Forest written by United States Forest Service and has been published by Forgotten Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-09-12 with Business & Economics categories.

Excerpt from The South's Fourth Forest: Alternatives for the Future The third forest will continue to be the source of the timber harvested in the South during the rest of this century. The forest that will come after that - the South's fourth forest - can take almost any form desired. The changes now taking place in the third forest are cause for great concern. Our most recent surveys of forest resources show that net annual timber growth, after rising for decades, has begun to decline. Softwood timber removals are above net annual growth over large areas, and inventories are beginning to decrease. A similar situation is developing for hardwoods. If these recent trends continue, The preface to The South's Third Forest How It Can Meet Future Demands (southern Forest Resource Analy'sis Committee 1969) began: The analysis was developed to learn how the Sout-t achieved its vastly improved, if not wholly 'favorable, timber position over the past several decades and how this trend could be continued. In a general sense, this is also the basic purpose of the pres ent study. Concern about the timber situation in the South began in the early l9oo's, when it become evident that forests over much of the South were not regenerating after harvest. This con cern led to a series of national and regional analyses that provided an analytical basis for developing policies and pro grams to renew and sustain the South's timber resource.
