Excerpt from The Forest Resources of the World It is therefore impossible to form a clear idea of the possibilities of a country and its future development without taking into account the natural resources and the general economic conditions of other countries with which it comes in contact. Highly developed means of transportation make it often more profitable to obtain certain products from a country which for Some reason is best able to pro duce them than to manufacture them at home, even though It is possible to do so. Excerpt from Foreign Trade Study of the Forest Products Industries The forest resources of the world are largely an unknown quantity, the only available figures are given in total acres of forest lands. Such figures really convey little, if any, information as to the world supply of saw timber. While it is known that Russia, Africa, South and Central America contain vast forests, not even estimates in board feet measure have been made of the amount of saw timber available in these remote regions. The above 1928 figures are taken from the Forest Service survey. Other figures are from the Bureau of the Census. Excerpt from Forest Resources of Western Montana Changes in the economic importance of species and closer utilization with respect to tree size have both contributed to higher current estimates. Prior to World War II, timber utilization rested heavily on white pine and ponderosa pine. Other species were far less valuable. As a consequence, even the early estimates of white pine volume were very realistic and those of ponderosa pine were not much in error. In contrast, the inventory of other species was at best very rough. Today there are 61 billion board feet of Douglas-fir, western larch, Engelmann spruce, lodgepole pine, and the minor species. This amounts to more than twice the volume of these species reported earlier. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Book of Forestry The American people are by inheritance a nation of forest butchers. Possessing a continent originally endowed with superb forests, unequalled in any part of the globe, the three hundred years which have passed since the Colonists landed upon the Atlantic Coast have seen the area of our forests diminished by acres, while the contents have been reduced to less than half. Excerpt from The School Book of Forestry Our forests, with their billions of trees, are the backbone of agriculture, the skeleton of lum bering, and the heart of industry. Even now, in spite of their depletion, they are the cream of our natural resources. They furnish wood for the nation, pasture for thousands of cattle and sheep, and water supply for countless cities and farms. They are the dominions of wildlife. Millions of birds, game animals, and fish live in the forests and the forest streams. The time is coming when our forests will be the greatest playgrounds of America. It is necessary that we preserve, protect, and expandour timber lands. By so doing we shall provide for the needs of future generations. Excerpt from The Story of the Forest With the design of telling the younger gener ation what the woodlands of this country are, and what they mean, this book has been pre pared, chiefly for use in the schools. Much of what it contains is new and out of the beaten track of textbooks, but it is nevertheless impor tant, especially at this time, when more attention 1s being concentrated upon subjects of practical importance. These earlier lessons being learned, pupils will be in a position to take an advanced step in nature study and in that other subject, very closely allied to it, American forestry. This amounts to more than twice the volume of these species reported earlier. Improved inventory techniques have been another major development. Estimates from earlier surveys were based largely on the compilation of public and private cruises, which varied greatly ln objectives and standards. Although Forest Survey made check cruises to adjust estimates to a common standard, the total result could not be statistically evaluated for reliability. Estimates presented in this report are based on greatly improved sampling procedures that reduce the risk of bias.
