Why do citizens from Central and Eastern Europe support or reject the European Union? It is unlikely that general evaluations of the EU emerge solely from attitudes towards the EU. This is because the EU is a remote and complex political system, especially for citizens from new EU Member States. This book identifies and analyzes the opinion formation process that leads to support for, or rejection of, the EU by Central and Eastern European citizens. A theoretical model is developed on the basis of findings from research on EU support and cognitive psychology. This model is tested empirically using survey data. The results show that citizens use cognitive heuristics when they are asked to evaluate the EU. They rely on existent attitudes towards their own familiar political system, the nation-state, to form opinions about the EU. What makes people identify with Europe? To answer this question, this book analyzes the development and determinants of a common European identity among EU citizens from the Maastricht Treaty in 1992 to the recent financial and economic crisis. The author examines citizens’ identification with Europe for all EU member states, and systematically explores the theoretical and empirical implications of two turning points in the recent history of EU integration, namely the EU’s enlargement to Central and Eastern Europe in 2004/2007 and the financial and economic crisis that started in 2008. The book integrates theoretical approaches to European identity in sociology, social-psychology and EU public opinion research in a comprehensive model for explaining individual identification with Europe. The empirical analysis employs a multilevel framework to systematically assess the influence of individual characteristics and the political, economic, and social context on citizens’ feelings of identity. The long analysis period spanning from 1992 to the present allows inferences to be drawn about the long-term developments in the sources of European identification as well as the immediate impact of EU enlargement and the crisis on the determinants of European identification.

Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Eastern Europe, grade: 1,0, Charles University in Prague (Social Sciences), 41 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Since the fall of communism CEE countries are undergoing a revival of civil society, also referred to as the 'third sector', which emerged after restrictions imposed under the communist party were abolished. The concept of civil society in its broader sense is the part of a society that exists next to state and market, the London school of Economics Civil Society department refers to it as "the arena of uncoerced collective action around shared interests, purposes and values." This collective action is formed by voluntary civic and social organisations or institutions referred to as non-profit organisations (NPOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). This phenomenon is of high interest considering the current European wide dispute over the role civil society should have next to government and business. European institutions have been trying to enhance the development of NGOs in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries through financial as well as institutional help. The EU enlargement was assumed to even further encourage the development of NGOs in CEE countries. Thus, the Czech Republic, one of the first aspirants of the CEE countries entering the EU, is considered to be a prime example to show how the mutual relation between the non-governmental sector in CEE countries and the EU institutions developed. To be able to define the politics and policies for future assistance of the European Union to CEE NGOs, two aspects are of special importance. One, it is necessary to understand the success NGOs in CEE countries have had in terms of succeeding to promote their interests in EU decision-making before and after the accession. Second, it is crucial to determine the role the European Union has played in the achievement of their goals.

Migration Creation And Diversion In The European Union written by Helena Marques and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with categories.

This article applies the concepts of trade creation and trade diversion to immigration into the EU-15 in order to investigate whether during 1986-2006 there were any significant preference effects in favour of the CEECs (central and eastern European countries) that make them 'natural' members of the EU single market for labour. If this hypothesis is true, there should have been strong migration creation but little migration diversion in the last 20 years. The results broadly support migration creation for the CEECs prior to their EU membership. At the same time, the evidence of diversion away from other world regions is mixed. The combined impact of a common language and established communities, compared to distance and a common border, may contribute to the preservation of migration channels from outside Europe. Within Europe, to be an EU outsider can have a negative impact on migration channels. Moreover, whilst liberal immigration policies increase immigration contemporaneously, restrictive immigration policies only show an impact with a two-year lag.

This report assesses the current situation regarding vocational training in Central and Eastern Europe and suggests projects and working methods that would be consistent with the mission of the Commission of the European Communities' European Training Foundation. Sections 1 through 4 focus on the following: the existing system's inability to train individuals to become instruments of political, economic, and social change and for training workers and to cope with unemployment and economic upheaval resulting from political reform; the necessity of international aid to reform vocational training in Central and Eastern Europe; key issues in global action to define strategies and build a new system in Central and Eastern Europe; and principles and themes that Western countries must observe when sharing their training expertise with Central and Eastern Europe. Chapter 5, which deals with the mission, working program, and methods of the European Training Foundation, proposes that the foundation act as an effective resource center/clearinghouse, use local expertise, and give priority support to integrated projects designed to help establish a vocational training system, support the creation of the instruments/resources needed for a rational training policy, and train vocational policymakers and practitioners.
