In 1871, a tiny nation, just four years old—it's population well below the 4 million mark—determined that it would build the world's longest railroad across empty country, much of it unexplored. This decision—bold to the point of recklessness—was to change the lives of every man, woman and child in Canada and alter the shape of the nation. Using primary sources—diaries, letters, unpublished manuscripts, public documents and newspapers—Pierre Berton has reconstructed the incredible decade of the 1870s, when Canadians of every stripe—contractors, politicians, financiers, surveyors, workingmen, journalists and entrepreneurs—fought for the railway, or against it. The National Dream is above all else the story of people. It is the story of George McMullen, the brash young promoter who tried to blackmail the Prime Minister; of Marcus Smith, the crusty surveyor, so suspicious of authority he thought the Governor General was speculating in railway lands; of Sanford Fleming, the great engineer who invented Standard Time but who couldn't make up his mind about the best route for the railway. All these figures, and dozens more, including the political leaders of the era, come to life with all their human ambitions and failings.

With the theme “China Dreams: Opportunities and Challenges,” this book contributes to emerging debates on Chinese new leadership's adaptability to important political, economic, social, and global issues. Can China's political system sustain “China Dreams”, a slogan ushered by Chinese President Xi Jinpin? Does the fulfillment of “China Dreams” require political reform? Does the initiation of the agenda of “China Dreams” facilitate China's economic transition? To what extent does “China Dreams” pave the way for China's peaceful rise? By exploring the preceding questions, the essays by Lowell Dittmer, Thomas Gold, Victoria Tin-bor Hui, Chin-fu Hung, Scott L Kastner, Huey-Lin Lee & Scott Y Lin, Chih-shian Liou, Raviprasad Narayanan, Kellee S Tsai, and Chung-min Tsai provide a comprehensive analysis of the agenda of China's new leadership. Key Features:A timely and comprehensive treatment of the issues associated with “China Dreams”In-depth analyses by leading scholars in China StudiesKeywords:The China Dream;Xi Jinpin;Chinese Leadership;Chinese Communist Party;ChinaReviews: "In this timely and pioneering publication, the authors asked the questions of where China wants to go and where it is actually going. While Mr Xi Jinping's 'China Dreams' suggested an all-encompassing China agenda, the imagination, interpretation and realization of the Dreams have been far more dynamic and not necessarily coherent. This well-edited volume covers key areas of China's political, economic and social development under Xi's leadership. The collection stands out in its balanced treatment of both the state and grassroots actors, and both the shared and separate dreams. It also makes a great contribution to the literature on Global China, as much of the 'China Dreams' is inevitably connected with the dreams of other peoples and countries." You-tien Hsing Professor of Geography Pamela P Fong and Family Distinguished Chair in China Studies Chair of Center for Chinese Studies University of California at Berkeley "Written by leading scholars of Chinese politics, economics, history, and society, this volume is one of the first to analyze Chinese leader Xi Jinping's notion of 'China Dreams'; Exploring both the content and likely impact of Xi's 'China Dreams', the authors paint a multifaceted picture of China's historical development, current status, and future trajectory — both domestically and internationally. Their findings suggest that China's leaders face substantial challenges, and that the realization of Xi's 'Dreams' may not be smooth. Some groups and vested interests appear determined to resist or redirect Xi's 'Dreams'. And there are signs that conflict and tension may accelerate, not only between the Chinese party-state and its people, but also within the party-state, and between China and other countries. For readers seeking a wide range of perspectives on China's rise, this volume provides much food for thought." Teresa Wright Chair and Professor of Political Science, California State University

Korean Dream: A Vision for a Unified Korea is a powerful call to action for Koreans and supporters everywhere to achieve a new nation, rooted in a common past. In this Centennial Edition, which debuted on several bestseller lists including the Wall Street Journal, LA Times, and Publishers Weekly, Dr. Hyun Jin Preston Moon presents an innovative way forward for the Korean Peninsula that at its heart is Korean led. Ultimately, Korean reunification is the only long-term solution to security, economic, and social problems created through a 70-year division of the Peninsula. Dr. Moon goes a step further, offering a groundbreaking approach to peace rooted in the founding principles of Hongik Ingan, cultural practices, and engagement from civil society organizations to empower Koreans to become global advocates for peace. Korean Dream calls upon Koreans, Korean diaspora, and people everywhere to take charge and work to achieve a reunified Korean peninsula. Korean Dream Empowers the Korean People to Rediscover Their Historic Identity. Dr. Moon’s vision empowers the Korean people to rediscover their 5,000-year-old historic identity and take it upon themselves to lead the way toward a peaceful reunification of the peninsula. A Nation Built on Shared History and Heritage. For reunification to happen, modern South Korea must recognize and embrace its shared history, heritage and culture. South Korea’s surging economy and decades of separation caused many to lose sight of its past and common connection with Koreans in the North. A Korean-led Future with Universal Principles and Values. Korea must represent the goals of its people in the form of a popular, representative form of government. A reunified Korea must give the Korean people the same freedoms and human rights that the American people and others around the world have today. Live for the Greater Benefit of All Humanity. Hongik Ingan defines the hope, potential, and strength of the Korean people. Korean Dream is devoted to the welfare of mankind in working toward reunification, drawing support from participants regarding human rights, universal spiritual principles and natural law toward a civic society. The Role of Civil Society and NGOs. Civic associations are the heart of a thriving democracy; a medium through which citizens contribute to and build the life of the national community. The Korean people must engage with one another and civic associations to address issues in local areas beyond the scope of government. Reunification is Only the First Step. Beyond Korean reunification, the Korean people would be in a position to become global advocates on the basis of high moral principles. These principles of the Korean Dream will become a global call for realizing a world that lives as One Family under God.

Dream Nation written by Stathis Gourgouris and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

Against the backdrop of ever-increasing nationalist violence during the last decade of the twentieth century, this book challenges standard analyses of nation formation by elaborating on the nation's dream-like hold over the modern social imagination. Stathis Gourgouris argues that the national fantasy lies at the core of the Enlightenment imaginary, embodying its central paradox: the intertwining of anthropological universality with the primacy of a cultural ideal. Crucial to the operation of this paradox and fundamental in its ambiguity is the figure of Greece, the universal alibi and cultural predicate behind national-cultural consolidation throughout colonialist Europe. The largely unpredictable institution of a modern Greek nation in 1830 undoes the interweaving of Enlightenment and Philhellenism, whose centrifugal strands continue to unravel the certainty of European history, down to the internal predicaments of the European Union or the tragedy of the Balkan conflicts. This 25th Anniversary edition of the book includes a new preface by the author in which he situates the book's original insights in retrospect against the newer developments in the social and political conditions of a now globalized world: the neocolonial resurgence of nationalism and racism, the failure of social democratic institutions, the crisis of sovereignty and citizenship, and the brutal conditions of stateless peoples.

For many Ukrainians, 1991 was a crucial point when their long-held dream of independence came true. The image of the future life in independent Ukraine was then almost identical to folklore images of Ukraine as the land of milk and honey. "Living the Independence Dream" takes a multi-dimensional look at the period of regained independence as a time of advancement towards the realization of collective dreams shaping the post-Soviet nation, even through everyday disappointments, anxiety, and uncertainty. The collection features personal accounts of several generations of Ukrainians who found themselves displaced by political upheavals in foreign lands, as well as the voices of recently displaced people who left the Donbas or other regions of Ukraine following the outbreak of the Russian aggression. It revisits the legacy of Soviet dissidents and explores the ideologies of Ukrainian language revival and the ways that memory and language construct Ukrainian identity and generate vital energy amidst war. The collection "Living the Independence Dream" aims to analyze the agency of contemporary Ukrainian people and the role of media, literature, and digital folklore in creating new messages, meanings, and values formed during the Independence decades.

All immigrants to America have a story with the American Dream, a story sometimes intimately intertwined with personal dreams. My story might be a surprising, if not maybe an unexpected one diverging from the usual account of pitiful existence in Haiti's slums or that of struggle for adaptation to America's way of life by one of Haiti's "boat people" who landed on South Florida's coast. It is a story that starts from the lower plains of the Artibonite Valley in Haiti with a dream from my great grandfather, Joizil Estimé, and continues in the United States, ultimately in Powell, Ohio. It is the story of a Haitian immigrant born in the small coastal town of Saint-Marc, Haiti. It evolves with my experiences growing up in my native country where my formative years were influenced by a connection to a diverse sociocultural environment. It progresses with my interaction with other societal enclaves in foreign lands like Germany and ultimately in the United States. It is an account of dreams fulfilled or unfulfilled, due not only to factors such as the convergence of different motivational agents (dreambuilders), the winds blowing on corporate America, whether in Haiti or the United States, but also to different conditions such as country of origin, globalization, social class, and Afro-ethnicity in America (dreamkillers). It is the story of coping with life changes, of integration into the American mainstream, of successes and disappointments of an immigrant from Haiti. But it is more than the story of an immigrant; it also reflects in a way the struggle of all immigrants coping with the pursuit of the American Dream and the quest for adaptation and continuous learning. It relates to all those who have wrestled with their dreams, those who have learned to make the best out of life's circumstances and keep a positive outlook in the era we live in. Dreambuilders, dreamkillers are in all walks of life.

National Matters written by Geneviève Zubrzycki and has been published by Stanford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-05-09 with Social Science categories.

National Matters investigates the role of material culture and materiality in defining and solidifying national identity in everyday practice. Examining a range of "things"—from art objects, clay fragments, and broken stones to clothing, food, and urban green space—the contributors to this volume explore the importance of matter in making the nation appear real, close, and important to its citizens. Symbols and material objects do not just reflect the national visions deployed by elites and consumed by the masses, but are themselves important factors in the production of national ideals. Through a series of theoretically grounded and empirically rich case studies, this volume analyzes three key aspects of materiality and nationalism: the relationship between objects and national institutions, the way commonplace objects can shape a national ethos, and the everyday practices that allow individuals to enact and embody the nation. In giving attention to the agency of things and the capacities they afford or foreclose, these cases also challenge the methodological orthodoxies of cultural sociology. Taken together, these essays highlight how the "material turn" in the social sciences pushes conventional understanding of state and nation-making processes in new directions.

T.E. Lawrence found global recognition for his leadership of the Arab Revolt during World War I, preparing the ground for the final Allied offensive in 1918. He was hailed as a hero, but little is known about this mysterious and charismatic man after those events. Here is Lawrence's life after Arabia, his service in the RAF and the Tank Corps as a mere ranker, and how he became an expert in the technology of the new RAF. The book examines the work he did for the 1929 Schneider Trophy Race, the development of the new RAF 200 seaplane tender, and the development of its armour plated offspring, the Armoured Target Boat. It also investigates his literary endeavours and his tragically early death, a sad end to a Renaissance man of all talents, an academic, a talented engineer and a soldier sans pareil. T.E. was offered exalted diplomatic positions by Churchill, implored by Nancy Astor to re-enter the fray as the Nazi threat grew, socialised with the Cliveden set, argued with the Archbishop of Canterbury. He made lasting friendships with humble squaddies. His self-loathing was expressed physically. Consulting primary sources and also having interviewed some of those who knew Lawrence after Arabia the author portrays the last years of one of the most astonishing figures of the 20th century.
