The Bauls & Fakirs of Bengal and Bangladesh certainly constitute a breed, different from other ethnic religious sects. They do not believe in worshipping in any citadel of religion like a temple, a mosque, or a church. They have the conviction that the body itself is the habitat of cosmic energy and also that the entire cosmos is present in a living body. They compare the body with a cage and the soul with an unknown bird which has come to stay for some time only. Most of the Bauls, who are not just singers but serious followers of the Baul path, do not believe in replication—creating any future progeny. They adopt special procedures for sexual union with menstruated female partners to retain the semen without losing it. To learn this very special technique which they do not share with any one, they have to take the help of learned and experienced Gurus who also teach them weird rituals like ‘Chari Chandra Bhed’ which involves consumption of semen, menstrual blood, urine and faeces. These folk medicine practices help them to keep diseases away and maintain good health. There have been lot of surveys and studies on the Bauls & Fakirs—primarily of historical, religious and sociological nature. This book goes a little deep to look at their songs, lifestyle, philosophy & practices from biological, psychological & management angles to establish that the Baulsphere is based on concepts and practices that have been proven scientific from modern research studies.

Because clothing, food, and shelter are basic human needs, they provide excellent entries to cultural values and individual aesthetics. Everyone gets dressed every day, but body art has not received the attention it deserves as the most common and universal of material expressions of culture. The Grace of Four Moons aims to document the clothing decisions made by ordinary people in their everyday lives. Based on fieldwork conducted primarily in the city of Banaras, India, Pravina Shukla conceptualizes and realizes a total model for the study of body art—understood as all aesthetic modifications and supplementations to the body. Shukla urges the study of the entire process of body art, from the assembly of raw materials and the manufacture of objects, through their sale and the interactions between merchants and consumers, to the consumer's use of objects in creating personal decoration.

Hinduism is a polytheistic religion. For the Hindus, Goddess Kali is the only austere, down-to-earth deity who believes in absolute simplicity and openness. She does not hide her body; she is naked with her private parts covered by a garland of severed hands of demons slain by her. Her mind is overt as she sticks out her tongue representing her thirst for the blood of evil people whom she is determined to overpower and also her feeling of shame. Her soul yearns for pure and authentic love. She is unlike other Hindu goddesses who are opulently dressed and majestically ornamented. Kali’s child, God incarnate Sri Sri Ramakrishna, like his mother goddess is casual not only about his dress but also about his worshipping habits. This book looks at Ramakrishna, his method of devotion, his yearning for the goddess, and his value system and entire philosophy. It analyses the Hindu Saint’s soul and its slices that he had shared and still continues to share, even today—long after he left this planet, with those who understand him thoroughly and are meant to propagate his message. The author’s method of analysis and treatment of the subject are unique as no other Kali or Ramakrishna scholar had used for their probes earlier.

The human emotion of love has its own spectrum like the rainbow, with its two extremes—represented by two different neuro-chemicals: ‘Dopamine’ (‘Smart Love’ & ‘Short-lived’ or ‘Short Love’) and ‘Oxytocin’ (‘Sustained Love’). In the ancient Indian ‘NatyaShastra’ of the great Bharata Muni, the essence or rasa of love is ‘Sringara’, having at its two poles ‘Kama’ (lust) and ‘Prema’ (pure love). As illustrations of the ‘Sringara’ rasa, the author has analysed a number of love song lyrics from different cultures. In this book, while the author has looked at and analysed ‘love’ from the angles of bio-medical, social, psychological and neurological sciences, one unique concept shared is that of the ‘love pie’. A very special section deals with ‘Futuristic Love’ where the author has discussed the idea of having a love-relationship with ‘AI’ (‘Artificial Intelligence’). Special contributions by the Stellar Maestro world-famous polymath musician-astrophysicist-philosopher-painter Dr Leonid Timoshenko of Russia and the top-ranking gynaecologist and obstetrician Dr Gouri Kumra from India are precious value-additions.

Sufis And Salafis In The Contemporary Age written by Lloyd Ridgeon and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-23 with Religion categories.

Sufis and Salafis in the Contemporary Age explores the dynamics at play between what are usually understood as two very different forms of Islam, namely Sufism and Salafism. Sufism is commonly understood as the peaceful and mystical dimension of Islam whereas Salafism is perceived as strictly pietistic and moralist, and for some it conjures up images of violent manifestations of Islam. Of course these generalisations require more nuanced investigation, and this book provides a number of case studies from around the Islamic world to unpack the intricate relationship between the two. The diversity of the case studies that focus on Islamic groups in India, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey and South East Europe reflect the multiplicity of relationships that exist between the Salafis and Sufis. The specific case studies are framed by an introduction that provides essential historical background and definitions of the terms, and also by general studies of the Sufi–Salafi relationship which enable the reader to focus on the large picture. This will be the first book to investigate the relationship between Sufism and Salafism in such a wide fashion, and includes chapters on "traditional" Sufis, as well as from those who consider that Sufism and Salafism are not necessarily contradictory.

In Between Worlds written by Sukanya Chakrabarti and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-25 with Performing Arts categories.

This book examines the performance of Bauls, ‘folk’ performers from Bengal, in the context of a rapidly globalizing Indian economy and against the backdrop of extreme nationalistic discourses. Recognizing their scope beyond the musical and cultural realm, Sukanya Chakrabarti engages in discussing the subversive and transformational potency of Bauls and their performances. In-Between Worlds argues that the Bauls through their musical, spiritual, and cultural performances offer ‘joy’ and ‘spirituality,’ thus making space for what Dr. Ambedkar in his famous 1942 speech had identified as ‘reclamation of human personality’. Chakrabarti destabilizes the category of ‘folk’ as a fixed classification or an origin point, and fractures homogeneous historical representations of the Baul as a ‘folk’ performer and a wandering mendicant exposing the complex heterogeneity that characterizes this group. Establishing ‘folk-ness’ as a performance category, and ‘folk festivals’ as sites of performing ‘folk-ness,’ contributing to a heritage industry that thrives on imagined and recreated nostalgia, Chakrabarti examines different sites that produce varied performative identities of Bauls, probing the limits of such categories while simultaneously advocating for polyvocality and multifocality. While this project has grounded itself firmly in performance studies, it has borrowed extensively from fields of postcolonial studies and subaltern histories, literature, ethnography and ethnomusicology, and cosmopolitan studies.
