Excerpt from Freedom and Liberty IN July 1916 I published an essay under the title of 'freedom Its aim was purely ethical that is, to show that, for the purposes of human evolution, each of the two opposites, law, or organic control, and liberty, or life, was of equal importance: that there can be no continued growth of the race as a whole without an equal growth of each of these conflicting principles. Beyond this conclusion I was unable to go. I recognized that as a system my philosophy was incomplete. It failed to provide the single final end without which Lthe deduction of ethical values is impossible. But, at the time, I had little hope of carrying the inquiry further, and I published the results, as far as they went, in a. Cheap form, to preserve them from oblivion. In my previous writings I had indicated that the universal final end of ethics must be found in religion. Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Excerpt from Freedom Through Limitation: Life Problem Series Some ten or fifteen years ago, when I first read Emerson's essay on Compensation, it made upon me a deep impres sion, though I did not then know that what is there stated by the writer is scientifically accurate. Plain and direct laws of the universe, such as those of gravity or hydrostatics, are not doubted by any one of ordi nary intelligence, because their effects are so plainly to be seen, and cause and effect are immediately joined one to the other. The law of compensation equally with these is of God; and it must therefore be just as exactly true. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Typical Recent Conceptions of Freedom A recent writer on the problem of freedom has declared it to be one of the most confused and complicated prob lems in the entire field of philosophy.' This confusion may, as he suggests, be accounted for both by the number of human interests concerned and by the history of the problem. Freedom has been discussed from the most diverse angles. Sometimes it has been regarded as pri marily a psychological problem; again, its intimate relation to problems of the moral life has been stressed; at various other times, its implications for metaphysics, for religion, for science, or for social theory have been in the forefront of attention. A short sketch, therefore, Of the history of the problem may serve to bring out its many-sidedness and to introduce us to contemporary conceptions of freedom. Excerpt from Principles of Freedom It was my intention to publish these articles in book form as soon as possible. I had them typed for the purpose. I had no time for revision save to insert in the typed copy words or lines omitted from the original printed matter. I also made an occasional verbal alteration in the original. One article, however, that on "Intellectual Freedom," though written in the series in the place in which it now stands, was not printed with them. It is now published for the first time. Religion I wish to make a note on the article under this heading to avoid a possible misconception amongst people outside Ireland. In Ireland there is no religious dissension, hut there is religious sincerity. English politicians, to serve the end of dividing Ireland, have worked on the religious feelings of the North, suggesting the danger of Catholic ascendancy. Excerpt from My Bondage and My Freedom: Part I., Life as a Slave; Part II., Life as a Freeman IF the volume now presented to the public were a mere work of art, the history of its misfortune might be written in two very simple words - Too late. The nature and character of slavery have been subjects of an almost endless variety of artistic representation; and after the brilliant achievements in that field, and while those achievements are yet fresh in the memory of the million, he who would add another to the legion, must possess the charm of transcendent exellence, or apologize for something worse than rashness. The reader is, therefore, assured, with all due promptitude, that his attention is not invited to a work of art, but to a work of facts - Facts, terrible and almost ih credible, it may be - yet facts, nevertheless. Excerpt from On Freedom Immanuel Kant has demonstrated in the Critique of Pure Reason that the idea of freedom and the law of nature taking part together in the same human action is one that does not involve any necessary contradiction. This was truly an epoch-making achievement, and had that great man left nothing else behind him for the instruction and inspiration of posterity than his exposition of the intelligible and empirical characters, he would still be remembered through the ages as the one of the mighty thinkers of the earth. No one can study that part of the Critique with an honest desire to appreciate its significance without being a convinced that mechanism, as the undisputed overlord of the realms of faith and knowledge, has finally been driven from the stronghold where so many had imagined it to be irrevocably and impregnably entrenched.
