The New York Times bestseller from the author of Help, Thanks, Wow, Hallelujah Anyway, Almost Everything, and Dusk, Night, Dawn. Lamott's long-awaited collection of new and selected essays on hope, joy, and grace. Anne Lamott writes about faith, family, and community in essays that are both wise and irreverent. It’s an approach that has become her trademark. Now in Small Victories, Lamott offers a new message of hope that celebrates the triumph of light over the darkness in our lives. Our victories over hardship and pain may seem small, she writes, but they change us—our perceptions, our perspectives, and our lives. Lamott writes of forgiveness, restoration, and transformation, how we can turn toward love even in the most hopeless situations, how we find the joy in getting lost and our amazement in finally being found. Profound and hilarious, honest and unexpected, the stories in Small Victories are proof that the human spirit is irrepressible.

This is a story of friendship which defies all the odds, and survives and flourishes regardless of the impediments which arise. The friendship is born out of an almost tragedy and extreme bravery by one Elizabeth Bennet. In saving the lives of those in peril, she thwarts the designs of one of the villains of this tale and makes an enemy of the person. As in canon, our Anne is sickly. In this variation it is because she had suffered a bad case of childhood scarlet fever. For the purposes of this story the disease has seriously weakened her cardio-vascular system. It is not a secret her life will not be a long one. We see how our Lizzy, aided by her sisters and others, improve Anne's quality of life and give her friendship and happiness she never thought she would find. All of the principal characters from canon are present, as well as some of my own invention, including two rather large (and I dare say popular) footmen-guards. Through Sir Lewis and Anne de Bourgh the Bennets (very different from those in canon) meet the Fitzwilliams and most of the Darcys. Do the connections they make change the initial meeting typically depicted between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy? How do Lady Catherine, George Wickham, Mrs. Younge, and the Bingleys factor into this story? The above questions and many more will be answered as you read my tale. This book is a full length novel of 110,000 words plus.

"Both heartbreaking and life-affirming" (Edith Eger, author of The Choice), the long-awaited New York Times bestselling memoir of Holocaust survivor Hannah Pick-Goslar, who shares an intimate look into her life and friendship with Anne Frank. In 1933, Hannah Pick-Goslar and her family fled Nazi Germany to live in Amsterdam, where she struck up a close friendship with her next-door neighbor, an outspoken and fun-loving young girl named Anne Frank. For several years, the inseparable pair enjoyed a carefree childhood of games, sleepovers, and treats with the other children in their neighborhood of Rivierenbuurt. But in 1942, Hannah and Anne's lives abruptly changed forever. As the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam progressed, Anne and the Frank family seemingly vanished, leaving behind unmade beds and dishes in the sink—but no trace of Anne's precious diary. Torn from her dear friend without warning, Hannah spent the next two years tormented by questions about Anne's fate, wondering if she had, by some miracle, managed to escape danger. In this long‑awaited memoir, Hannah shares the story of her childhood during the Holocaust, from the introduction of anti-Jewish laws in Amsterdam to the gradual disappearance of classmates and, eventually, the Frank family, to Hannah and her family's imprisonment in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. As Hannah chronicles the experiences of her own life during and after the war, she provides a searing look at what countless children endured at the hands of the Nazi regime, as well as an intimate, never‑before‑seen portrait of the most recognizable victim of the Holocaust. Culminating in an astonishing fateful reunion, My Friend Anne Frank is the profoundly moving story of childhood and friendship during one of the darkest periods in the world's history.

Sadakichi Hartmann was born on the artificial island of Dejima, Nagasaki, to a Japanese mother, who died soon after childbirth, and a German father. He was raised in Germany and came to Philadelphia in 1882. Two years after arriving, at the age of seventeen, he paid his first visit to Walt Whitman, now sixty-five years old, who was living modestly just across the Delaware River, in Camden. Fascinated by the poet’s life and work, Sadakichi would visit Whitman several times over the course of six years, to talk about literature and to question the poet about contemporary authors and books. Sadakichi went on to publish Whitman’s opinions first in the New York Herald, in 1880, arousing the indignation of many and making him unpopular with the admirers of the poet, and later, in 1885, in Conversations with Walt Whitman.

ANNE OF THE ISLAND by L.M. Montgomery is the third in the Anne of Green Gables series. This book tells the story of Anne Shirley's and her friends' college years. As the security of home and childhood comforts fade, each must face the trials of being on their own. Anne travels to Kingsport to go to college despite the mixed feelings among the family at home. Most of her family would like her to marry Gilbert Blythe, a close childhood friend. Gilbert is also going to Kingsport for college and would like nothing more than to have Anne reveal that she feels more than friendship for him. Anne is determined to get an education and not simply search for a husband as the busybodies at home expect. Anne is excited that one of her girlfriends, Priscilla, is also attending Redmond College. At home, Anne's best friend Diana is engaged to Fred and living the home life. Despite being separated by interests and distance, each visit home reaffirms that a long distance friendship can survive. Every visit home teaches Anne to appreciate her past, and her future and gives her a sense of balance in her life. While at college, Anne makes a new friend, Philippa, who is unlike any friend that she has ever had. Philippa is a flighty, indecisive, loyal, and smart friend whose beauty and popularity thrust Anne and Priscilla into the limelight at school. Philippa is determined to marry a rich man but is unable to determine who that may be as she has many beaus including two boys at home that have proposed. The three girls move in together into a comfortable home called Patty's Place and learn how to work and live together. Despite Philippa's family's monetary connections, she learns how to do chores and live in a less than perfect situation and even relishes the changes to her life. Anne is a good influence on all her friends by making them realize that what they have and what they expect is only important if they first have the love and loyalty of family and friends. When Gilbert proposes to Anne in their second year of college, she turns him down telling him that she does not love him. She wants to stay friends but their friendship is not the same afterward, and Anne feels the loss keenly. She starts dating a charming, rich guy, Roy Gardner who gives her the "thrilling" life she wants. Anne becomes close friends with Roy's sister Dorothy and both relationships flourish. After four years of college, Philippa finds love with a poor preacher whom she adores despite his poverty. She has learned the value of love over monetary considerations from Anne. When Roy proposes, Anne realizes that he excites her but she is not in love with him. When Gilbert almost dies from typhoid fever, Anne realizes she loves him and wants a life with her childhood friend. He will always be the light and love of her life.
