The wet strength of adhesive bonds between resins and glass or metal can be substantially improved by applying adhesion promoters to the glass or metal surface. The most widely used of these adhesion promoters are the organofunctional trialkoxysilanes (RSi(OR')3. Some of the more pertinent research results concerning these silanes have been reviewed in the hope of establishing how they function as finishing agents. Work indicates that these compounds form polysiloxane coatings on the adherend surface. These coatings consist of a strongly adsorbed polysiloxane network along with a more weakly held material consisting of small polymer molecules and unreacted silane. The polysiloxane network exposes a high density of the organofunctional group R- at the air/silane-coating interface. However, the R- groups are not closely spaced, and, in fact, there is some evidence that the coatings can be penetrated by the adhesive resin. Some new approaches are offered for research into the highly complex but exceedingly important area of adhesion promoters. (Author).

This volume chronicles the proceedings of the Symposium on Adhesion Aspects of Polymeric Coatings held under the auspices of the Electrochemical Society in Minneapolis, MN, May 10-15, 1981. This event was cosponsored by the Dielectric and Insulation, and Electrothermics and Metallurgy Divisions. Polymeric coatings are used for a number of purposes, e. g. , decorative, protective, functional (as dielectrics or insulators) and a special application of polymeric (organic) coatings is their use as lithographic materials for making integrated circuit elements. Irrespective of the purpose of the coating, it must adhere well to the underlying substrate. So the need to under stand the factors which influence adhesion of organic coatings and the ways to attain desired adhesion is quite manifest. This Symposium was designed to bring together scientists and technologists interested in the adhesion aspects of polymeric coatings, to provide a forum for discussion of latest findings, and to provide an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas. The technical program contained a total of 46 papers by authors from various corners of the world. The program comprised both invited overviews and contributed original research papers, as this blend is the best way to present the state of knowledge of a topic. The invited speakers were selected so as to represent widely differ ing disciplines and interests and they hailed from various aca demic and industrial research laboratories.

With the ever-increasing amount of research being published, it is a Herculean task to be fully conversant with the latest research developments in any field, and the arena of adhesion and adhesives is no exception. Thus, topical review articles provide an alternate and very efficient way to stay abreast of the state-of-the-art in many subjects representing the field of adhesion science and adhesives. Based on the success of the preceding volumes in this series “Progress in Adhesion and Adhesives”), the present volume comprises 12 review articles published in Volume 5 (2017) of Reviews of Adhesion and Adhesives. The subject of these 12 reviews fall into the following general areas. Nanoparticles in reinforced polymeric composites. Wettability behavior and its modification, including superhydrophobic surfaces. Ways to promote adhesion, including tuber adhesion. Adhesives and adhesive joints Dental adhesion. The topics covered include: Nanoparticles as interphase modifiers in fiber reinforced polymeric composites; fabrication of micro/nano patterns on polymeric substrates to control wettability behavior; plasma processing of aluminum alloys to promote adhesion; UV-curing of adhesives; functionally graded adhesively bonded joints; adhesion between unvulgarized elastomers; electrowetting for digital microfluidics; control of biofilm at the tooth-restoration bonding interface; easy-to-clean superhydrophobic coatings; cyanoacrylates; promotion of resin-dentin bond longevity in adhesive dentistry; and effects of nanoparticles on nanocomposites Mode I and Mode II fractures.

This book embodies the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Silanes and other Adhesion Promoters held in Newark, New Jersey, October 21--23, 1998. Silanes are the most popular and widely used coupling agents (or adhesion promoters) to promote adhesion between dissimilar materials in a variety of situations, e.g. coating technology, adhesive bonding, reinforced composites, etc. Since the first symposium on this topic in 1991, there had been a tremendous R&D activity in developing new and more effective adhesion promoters and in understanding and optimising the performance of available coupling agents. The technical program for the symposium contained 36 papers and reflected both overviews and original research contributors and the presenters hailed from academia, industry and other research laboratories. Many different aspects of coupling agents were discussed, and both fundamental and applied aspects were accorded due coverage. In addition to formal presentations, there were brisk and lively discussions throughout the symposium, and this event provided an opportunity for cross-pollination of ideas in the broad arena of adhesion promoters. This present volume contains 18 papers by experts from academia, industry and other research laboratories. All manuscripts were subjected to rigorous peer review and were suitably revised before inclusion in this volume. The book is divided into two parts as follows: Part 1. Silane Coupling Agents; and Part 2: Non-silane Coupling Agents/Adhesion Promotors. The topics covered include: silane adhesion prompters for hydrosilylation cure systems; sterically hindered silanes; study of silanes hydrolysis; adsorption of silanes on different substrates; interaction of water with silane films studied by neutron reflection; characterization of glass fiber sizings; silanes as dispersion promoters; corrosion protection of metals by silanes; surface 'Intelligraft' as a new class of adhesion promoters; hydroxymethylated resorcinol, sol-gels, and -diketone functionalised polymers as adhesion promoters; and plasma deposition of silanes.

For several years, I have been responsible for organizing and teaching in the fall a short course on "Fundamentals of Adhesion: Theory, Practice, and Applications" at the State University of New York at New Paltz. Every spring I would try to assemble the most pertinent subjects and line up several capable lecturers for the course. However, there has always been one thing missing-an authoritative book that covers most aspects of adhesion and adhesive bonding. Such a book would be used by the participants as a main reference throughout the course and kept as a sourcebook after the course had been completed. On the other hand, this book could not be one of those "All you want to know about" volumes, simply because adhesion is an interdisciplinary and ever-growing field. For the same reason, it would be very difficult for a single individual, especially me, to undertake the task of writing such a book. Thus, I relied on the principle that one leaves the truly monumental jobs to experts, and I finally succeeded in asking several leading scientists in the field of adhesion to write separate chapters for this collection. Some chapters emphasize theoretical concepts and others experimental techniques. In the humble beginning, we planned to include only twelve chapters. However, we soon realized that such a plan would leave too much ground uncovered, and we resolved to increase the coverage. After the book had evolved into thirty chapters, we started to feel that perhaps our mission had been accomplished.

* It has been rumored that a bumble bee has such aerodynamic deficiencies that it should be incapable of flight. Fiberglass-reinforced polymer com posites, similarly, have two (apparently) insurmountable obstacles to per formance: 1) Water can hydrolyze any conceivable bond between organic and inorganic phase, and 2) Stresses across the interface during temperature cycling (resulting from a mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients) may exceed the strength of one of the phases. Organofunctional silanes are hybrid organic-inorganic compounds that are used as coupling agents across the organic-inorganic interface to help overcome these two obstacles to composite performance. One of their functions is to use the hydrolytic action of water under equilibrium condi tions to relieve thermally induced stresses across the interface. If equilib rium conditions can be maintained, the two problems act to cancel each other out. Coupling agents are defined primarily as materials that improve the practical adhesive bond of polymer to mineral. This may involve an increase in true adhesion, but it may also involve improved wetting, rheology, and other handling properties. The coupling agent may also modify the inter phase region to strengthen the organic and inorganic boundary layers.
