This book explores how television in the global South is ‘future-proofing’ its continued relevance, addressing its commercial, social and political viability in a constantly changing information ecosystem. The chapter contributions in the book are drawn from countries in East, South and West Africa, the Middle East and Latin America, specially selected for their illustrative potential of the key issues addressed in the book. Scholarly attention on television in the global South has largely been limited to studying evolving television formats with broader structural issues covered almost entirely by industry reports. Major gaps remain in terms of understanding how television in the global South is changing within the context of the significant technological developments and what this means for television’s future(s). The chapters reflect on these futures, not in the sense of predicting what these might be, but rather anticipating important areas of intellection. The contributors contend that much of the scholarship on the global South, by scholars from the South, is often stilted by a reluctance to anticipate. This failure leads to a largely reactionary scholarship, constantly oppositional, and unable to recentre conversations on the South. This volume finds intellectual incentive in this urgent need to anticipate, hence its particular focus on television futures. Taking television in the global South as an important cultural and political barometer, the book seeks to explore how television in the global South is adapting to the rampant technological changes and processes of globalisation.

This book presents a collection of chapters that focus on the convergence of television today, approached using an interdisciplinary perspective. Clearly, the importance of technological advances describes only one aspect of this evolutionary process. In this book, convergence is also examined from other equally important perspectives, which include a historical case study on convergence and culture-viewer evolution and the changes that interactivity has introduced as opposed to static content. Because this publication focuses on all aspects that transform the medium, users, content, broadcasting, and interactive technology, it becomes evident that convergence is a highly interdisciplinary subject that must always be addressed from various perspectives.

`An outstanding book on a significant topic... I recommend this highly to interested readers' - Arvind Singhal, Professor and Presidential Research Scholar, Ohio University `Imagi-Nations and Borderless Television neatly captures the revolution that television in Asia has gone through over the last 15 years.... Important for anyone wishing to understand the future of Asian television' - Andre Nair, Chairman and CEO Asia Pacific, Mediaedge: CIA `The book is overdue... a useful reference for anyone who is interested in the development of transnational television in Asia' - Joseph Man Chan, Professor of Communications, Chinese University of Hong Kong `Amos Owen Thomas takes us through this momentous change, with an extensively researched and cogently argued book. A must-read volume for scholars interested in television in Asia and around the world' - Daya K Thussu, Professor, University of Westminster The media and communications scene in Asia underwent radical transformation towards the turn of the 20th century. The advent in the early 1990s of transnational television via satellite caught Asia unawares, much as it has the world over. This book brings a transnational and inter-disciplinary perspective to understanding the media industry in Southeast, South and Northeast Asia. Imagi-Nations and Borderless Television demonstrates that the globalisation of cultural industries involves not homogenising westernization, but postmodern hybridisation. Amos Owen Thomas analyses how and why this has occurred within the larger context of economic, political, social and cultural processes within regions, nation-states, transborder ethnic communities, even international diaspora. He argues that in the case of transnational television, growth was influenced not just by governments and policy makers but also by the strategic management decisions of media owners, cable operators, satellite providers, ad agencies, marketers and other players, whether pro-active or reactive. Not only does this book explicate the processes of television globalization, it seeks to raise some socio-ethical issues that ought to be addressed in managing newer electronic media in these and other developing countries and emerging markets around the world. Challenging conventional notions about the cultural imperialism of global media conglomerates, this book is widely welcomed by a broad readership ranging from communication and media studies to multinational business, policy makers and NGOs. Amos Owen Thomas is an Associate Professor of International Business at the Maastricht School of Management, Netherlands.

This book analyses a South-to-South connection between media activists and artivists – artists who are activists – in the Global South. The authors, Andrea Medrado and Isabella Rega, emphasise the urgent need to engage in South-to-South dialogues in order to create more sustainable connections between Global South communities and as an essential step towards identifying and facing global problems, such as state repression, social inequality and climate crises. Medrado and Rega analyse the characteristics of this connection, identify its unique contributions to the study of media and social change and discuss its long-term sustainability. They do so by focusing on instances when media narratives in countries of different Global South(s) intertwine and transform each other; specifically, the exchanges between Latin America (Brazil) and Africa (Kenya). They explore how media activism and artivism can be used as tools for global movement building and to challenge colonial legacies. They also discuss how to connect people with varied skill sets in different Global South contexts, promoting South-to-South solidarity, in a cross-continental challenge to marginalisation. Crucial reading for students and scholars of media activism, social movements, global media and communication, development studies and international studies, as well as activists and social movement organisations.

New media, development and globalization are the key terms through which the future is being imagined and performed in governance, development initiatives and public and political discourse. Yet these authoritative terms have arisen within particular cultural and ideological contexts. In using them, we risk promoting over-generalized and seemingly unchallengeable frameworks for action and knowledge production which can blind us to the complex global patterns and promise of social reality. This compelling book forces us to look at these terms afresh. Drawing on more than ten years of ethnographic fieldwork in Latin America, West Africa and South Asia, Don Slater seeks to challenge these terms as voicing specific northern narratives rather than universal truths, and to see them from the perspective of southern people and communities who are equally concerned to understand new machines for communication, new models of social change and new maps of social connection. The central question the book poses is: how we can democratize the ways we think and practise new media, development and globalization, opening these terms to dialogue and challenge within North-South relations? Rooted in sociological debates, New Media, Development and Globalization will also be a provocative contribution to media and cultural studies, studies of digital culture, development studies, geography and anthropology.
