The 5th Edition core rules of D&D offer a solid discussion of the how's and why's of random encounters, but the subject still deserves more - much more. It's for that reason The Game Master's Book of Wilderness Encounters exists. This extraordinary book expands on the subject of random encounters and gives GMs a more thorough idea of what might happen when a party bumps into...let's say...a group of orcs as they plunge into the forest. In The Game Master's Book of Wilderness Encounters, readers will find 10 core chapters, each devoted to a particular type of wilderness terrain: Caverns, Desert, Forest, Grasslands, Hills, Littoral, Mountains, Ocean, Tundra and Wetlands. After a brief discussion of the terrain type, each chapter launches into a series of tables and sub-tables outlining possible plausible encounters. They cover most of the creatures included in 5th Edition core rulebooks, from familiar wild animals to exotic monsters like kraken and purple worms, plus humanoids, various vocations/professions, and physical hazards that GMs can use for petty harassment (just to remind their players that adventuring isn't all fun and glory). In turn, each table entry discusses how that creature reacts -- topics range from how to acquire a pet rat to what that ancient red dragon is thinking as it looks down at the party -- how many of them are present (scaled to the party's average level), and what treasure might be gained from defeating it. In addition to the more than 600 random table entries, readers will find 10 new monsters - one for each environmental zone - plus three one-shot adventures that put the tables into play. The Game Master's Book of Wilderness Encounters offers GMs a deep dive into an under-explored aspect of RPGs. Even experienced GMs will find food for thought and fresh ideas about how to make a party food for monsters.

The Game Master's Battle Tracker: Wilderness is designed to allow you to keep track of important stats during battles in roleplaying game sessions. It can be used with any roleplaying game system. Forget about using scrap pieces of paper to track the health of enemies during combat, or the health of the party's followers and allies. At the start of a battle fill in details of the location on the hex map, the adversaries the party face and any stats of followers or allies with the party on the opposite page. You can prepare in advance for any encounters the party are certain to have or fill out pages as the game evolves. The book is designed to use one double-page spread for each battle. Each double-page spread has a hex map grid for marking the locations of the players and their adversaries in outdoor areas and a chart with columns for marking off the health of adversaries and NPCs, allies or followers. You can mark the map with your own symbols and scale as desired. Keeping track of spell durations and effects in combat is now easy with the events and effects by round tracker on every page. When a player or enemy casts a spell, drinks a potion or causes some other time-based effect like poison or paralysis, pencil in the duration in the numbered round slot. Cross off rounds as they pass, then check each new round slot for any marked events. You'll never again have trouble keeping track of complex combat scenarios with spells and special attacks flying back and forth! Check out the Battle Tracker: Dungeons & Cities for indoor combat scenarios with square grid map paper.

One Table to Rule Them All! The Mother of All Encounter Tables is here! This utility is unlike any before conceived. This is not just a random book of tables, but a well-thought-out dungeon master utility that will make wilderness travel, city streets, and dungeon corridors all more interesting. It contains encounters for each terrain type from mountains to the ocean, in each climate from arctic to tropical, and has separate tables for day and night encounters. Also factored in are relative rarities of individual encounters, with space left for the DM to insert new monsters of his choosing. In addition to encounters with monsters and men, there are tables for unusual weather events, strange occurrences, accidents, and encounters with NPCs. Trade routes and caravans are detailed as well as trolls and dragons. After all, you never know when ants will infest your food, or when the cleric will get struck by lightning!

I talk about this in the Introduction to Book of Chance Meetings, but random encounters in roleplaying games have always fascinated me. I started with Dungeons & Dragons shortly after AD&D became a thing, and the big appendix of random encounters in the AD&D DMG still blows my mind. The fact that encounters could come at you out of nowhere meant that almost anything was possible even if the DM hadn't thought of it, and that appendix demonstrated in graphic form the richness and variety of all the living (and undead) things in the game. All those tables, so many tables.... And yet, I felt - and still feel - that more guidance on how to make random encounters work would be helpful. You get 10 main chapters, each devoted to a particular type of wilderness terrain: Caverns, Desert, Forest, Grasslands, Hills, Littoral, Mountains, Ocean, Tundra and Wetlands. After a brief discussion of that terrain type, each chapter launches into a series of tables and sub-tables outlining possible plausible encounters. They cover most of the creatures included in the 5th Edition Standard Reference Document, from familiar wild animals to exotic monsters like kraken and purple worms, plus humanoids, various vocations/professions, and physical hazards that you can use for petty harassment (just to remind your players that adventuring isn't all fun and glory). In turn, each table entry discusses how that creature reacts - topics range from how to acquire a pet rat to what that ancient red dragon is thinking as it looks down at your party - how many of them are present (scaled to your party's average level), and what treasure might be gained from defeating it. Book of Chance Meetings gives DMs a deep dive into an under-explored aspect of RPGs. Even experienced DMs will find food for thought and fresh ideas about how to make a party food for monsters.
