Excerpt from The Game of Hand Ball and How to Play It One of the greatest drawbacks to the advancement of the game has been improperly constructed courts. A perfect court makes a perfect player, and nothing affects the pleasure of the exercise so much as crooked walls and an unbalanced floor. As a rule, however, the courts that have been erected in this country of. Late years answer the purposes fairly well, although the expenditure of a little more money would have produced a much better building. Excerpt from Handball and How to Play It It is altogether uncertain at what period handball was intro duced into England, but like the Greeks the early inhabitants of Albion copied it from the Celts. In the museum of Trinity Col lege, Oxford, there is a fourteenth century manuscript containing a life of St. Cuthbert. It says of him that when he was young 'he pleyde atte handeballe with the children that his fellows were. On what authority this information is established it is hard to understand, but the venerable Bede, who also wrote the life of that saint, mentions him to be an expert handball player and that he excelled in running, jumping and such exercises as required great muscular power. Fitzstephen, who wrote in the thirteenth century, speaking of the London schoolboys, says: Annually upon Shrove Tuesday they go into the field, im mediately after dinner, and play the celebrated game of handball, every party of boys carrying their own ball. During the Easter holidays it was the custom in those days to play for tansy cakes, but Bourne fails to understand why they should play handball at this season above any other time. Excerpt from The Game of Hand Ball and How to Play It Although the game of handball is generally conceded to be of Irish origin, and has been played with more or less fervor throughout the little green isle for a century at least, the invigorating pastime has, within a very recent date, become a great favorite with the lovers of sport in America, and is fast being incorporated as a regular athletic exercise at all of our prominent clubs and educational institutions. The cause of its increasing popularity is easily explained. While it requires time, patience, and considerable skill before the game can be fully mastered, the method is so simple and the rules so easy to comprehend that even the beginner feels himself thoroughly at home in the court. As a healthful and exhilarating exercise there is no game extant that develops a person's physical quality so well as handball. The best evidence of this is the splendid condition of those who are now regular patrons of the game. It calls into play every muscle in the body, will tend to teach one to look quickly, while the running that is necessary will certainly improve the wind if anything does. As a means of placing a baseball player into condition for his seasons work, the old Irish game, as it is generally termed, presents opportunities not afforded by any other exercise. In the earlier days of the National Baseball League it was quite a common occurrence to see its players practising at handball. Some of the crack players then were Pitcher James Devlin, George Bechtel, of the old Atnletics; Nat Hicks, the famous catcher of the Mutuals of New York; Robert Ferguson, of tne Atlantics; James McCormick and Michael J. Kelly, of the Chicagos. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Handball and How to Play It The game of handball is undoubtedly of Celtic origin, and the proof of the assertion rests with the fact that wherever this nomadic race has set foot only there will be found traces of the pastime. The earliest authentic mention of handball, according to the annals of Ireland, occurs in the year 3370 A. M., or 1,879 years prior to the Christian Era. This was in connection with the Tailten games, inaugurated by Ere, the last king of the Firbolgs, in honor of his daughter-in-law Tailte. As to the particular style in which the game was played it is now impossible to accurately determine, but from the meagre accounts of the early chroniclers no walls were used, but the ball was tossed from "hand to hand,'' and the "Book of Leinster" mentions it as being one of the prominent events on the Tailten programme. These games were celebrated each year, and even with the slow methods of communication they were not long in becoming the theme of inhabited Europe. And warriors flocked from every quarter to take part in the running, jumping, the feat of gae bolga, or throwing the belly dart; the roth cleas or wheel feat; chariot racing and other eents too numerous to mention. To such an extent was the spirit of emulation created among the visitors that in the thirteenth century before Christ, or some five hundred years after the inauguration of Tailten, the Greeks organized the Olympian games. Of the advent and subsequent success of this imitation of the Celtic festival it is needless to speak, but it was the first introduction into Greece of handball. Killshot Tate Coldiron, in his early fifties, with a Jack Daniel's Green habit and two withered legs, has his car break down in Rochester, NY on his way to handball tournament in Cleveland. A former championship handball player; whose legs were broken 25 years earlier for hustling the wrong opponent; Coldiron has survived since by playing match games for money. Coldiron hustles a local player for a few bucks, in doing so seeing potential in the raw, but talented Barry West. He makes West an offer to train him and take him on the road to play match games for money against the best players in the country. West, tired of his job and life in Rochester, and with support from his girlfriend, Susan, agrees. Following a rigorous training period, during which Coldiron transforms his young protg into a superior handball player, the two go on the road. Barry West puts together a fabulous string of victories, bringing in tens of thousands of dollars. However, Coldiron's handball student resorts to doing anything to win, including hitting other players with the ball that travels over a hundred miles per hour. And West's need to win at any cost supersedes his love for Susan, and his allegiance to Coldiron. After West maims a few more players-including some of Coldiron's old handball friends-Tate, guided by his love for the purity of the game, decides he must take West out. He is forced to destroy the winning machine he created. It all comes down to one explosive and exciting match. It is winner takes all; a matter of love, life, and death.
