Excerpt from The Gentile and the Jew, Vol. 1 of 2: In the Courts of the Temple of Christ This work is, I believe, the first attempt that has been made to represent the Paganism of the period previous to our Lord, with at least an effort at completeness, the sketch embracing the heathen religious system, heathen modes of thought and speculation, heathen philosophy, life, and manners, so far as they were severally connected with the religion, were determined by it, and reacted upon it in their turn. The title of my work indicates the point of view from which the sketch is taken. The history of Christianity necessarily presumes, for the bare understanding of it, an acquaintance with the history of the Pagan and the Jew. The questions, - what soil did Christianity find to build on? to what doctrines and systems of thought could it attach itself? what circumstances paved the way for it, and forwarded and facilitated its expansion? what obstacles, prejudices, and errors had it to overcome? what adversaries to encounter? what evils to remedy? how did Paganism react on Christianity? - all these questions, on the importance of which it were superfluous to waste a word here, admit, as it appears to me, of a satisfactory solution only through an exposition, penetrating as deeply beneath the surface, and of as wide an horizon, as the present. While interest in Paul's relationship to Judaism has been growing recently, this study adds an important aspect by comparing Paul’s practical instruction with the ancient halakha or Jewish traditional law. First Corinthians is found to be a source of prime importance, and surprisingly, halakha appears to be basic to Paul's instruction for non-Jewish Christians. The book includes thorough discussion of hermeneutic and methodological implications, always viewed in relation to the history of Pauline and Judaic study. Attention is also being paid to the setting within Hellenistic culture. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the texture of Paul's thought and these are applied to two ‘theological’ passages decisive for his place in Judaism. Historical and theological implications are vast, both regarding Paul's relationship to Judaism, his attitude towards Jesus and his Apostles, and the meaning of his teaching concerning justification and the Law.

Relations between Jews and non-Jews in the Hellenistic-Roman period were marked by suspicion and hate, maintain most studies of that topic. But if such conjectures are true, asks Louis Feldman, how did Jews succeed in winning so many adherents, whether full-fledged proselytes or "sympathizers" who adopted one or more Jewish practices? Systematically evaluating attitudes toward Jews from the time of Alexander the Great to the fifth century A.D., Feldman finds that Judaism elicited strongly positive and not merely unfavorable responses from the non-Jewish population. Jews were a vigorous presence in the ancient world, and Judaism was strengthened substantially by the development of the Talmud. Although Jews in the Diaspora were deeply Hellenized, those who remained in Israel were able to resist the cultural inroads of Hellenism and even to initiate intellectual counterattacks. Feldman draws on a wide variety of material, from Philo, Josephus, and other Graeco-Jewish writers through the Apocrypha, the Pseudepigrapha, the Church Councils, Church Fathers, and imperial decrees to Talmudic and Midrashic writings and inscriptions and papyri. What emerges is a rich description of a long era to which conceptions of Jewish history as uninterrupted weakness and suffering do not apply.
