Rumi is now acknowledged as one of the great mystical poets of the Western world, with huge sales of the many collections of his poetry. Not much is known about his life except that he lived in thirteenth-century Anatolia (now Turkey), had a great spiritual friendship with a wild man called Shams, brought an adopted daughter into his family, and was distraught when Shams finally disappeared. Rumi's Daughter is the delightful novel about Kimya, the girl who was sent from her rural village to live in Rumi's home. She already had mystical tendencies, and learned a great deal under Rumi's tutelage. Eventually she married Shams, an unusual husband, almost totally absorbed by his longings for God. Their marriage was fiery and different and, in the end, dissolved by Kimya's death - after which Shams vanished. Rumi's Daughter tells Kimya's story with great charm and tenderness. Well written and thought-provoking, it is sure to draw comparison with Paolho Coelho's The Alchemist, and also to add something fresh and new to what is so far known about Rumi.

When her infant daughter Sarah unexpectedly dies, Claire, feeling blame, reinvents herself as a landscape gardener in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, Claire imagines Sarah still alive, marking her birthdays, Christmas, first day of school—as if Sarah never died. Remarrying, Claire acquires a step-daughter, eight-year-old Mandy—about the age Sarah would be had she lived. Part vamp, part jealous, bossy and troubled, Mandy is nothing like Sarah, who still lives on in Claire's imagination. As Claire lives two lives—one real, one imagined—the clash between the two daughters threatens to destroy her, releasing the demons she has managed, so far, to hold at bay. As the story hurtles towards its harrowing ending. Claire must choose between her new life and her haunted past. "A Real Daughter is the real thing: a compelling, psychologically astute inquiry into the seismic shifts of one, uneasily blending California family haunted by the past." - Cristina Garcia, novelist, Dreaming in Cuban, National Book Award finalist "Has a Maupassant quality of horror artfully restrained—until it isn't … Masterful writing and storytelling … Deeply unnerving." - Hilary Reyl, novelist, Lessons in French "The writing is luscious and chilling. Expect to be afraid—and then horrified." - Mary Morrissey, novelist, Mother of Pearl, Lannan Literary Award for Fiction

Poetry. "In these bracing meditations on matriarchal inheritance and the nature of the real, Lynn Otto breaks open pervasive, inherited silences, the 'prickered vines' that 'hold one so still.' By putting into motion various methods of perception, Otto transforms habitual stillness into 'survivable distance.' She has written a rare and moving kind of lyric autobiography--one rich with the shifting, the gaps, the push and pull of an alert, multitudinous mind."--Mary Szybist "Lynn Otto's powerful collection, REAL DAUGHTER, reminds me that what appears quiet and straightforward can yield a high order of surprise. These subtle, smart poems explore essential questions: What is it to be real, as in authentic? What can we expect, and what should we expect, of ourselves, for ourselves, and in relation to loved ones? Otto's poems move with elegant precision, wit, and a distinctive music. As lyrical inquiries into the tensions between mothers and daughters, religious belief and felt doubt, ritual that both binds and separates us, Otto's work brings to mind W. H. Auden's description of poetry as the clear expression of mixed feelings. REAL DAUGHTER is a lucent exploration of familial love and its entanglements, and of the challenges of being a self among others."--Michele Glazer "In her compelling debut collection, Lynn Otto explores inherent complications of family, our ache to understand our attachments. Our allegiances are multiple and continually in flux. What happens when they are at odds with one another? How do we hold on and simultaneously let go? The carefully wrought, often heart-rending poems in REAL DAUGHTER address these questions."--Andrea Hollander "'How is it,' Lynn Otto asks, 'we each learn / one story, and every sentence ever after / sounds to us like it belongs to it?' In other words, what is the nature of meaning? REAL DAUGHTER relentlessly and movingly poses this most essential question, as it examines mortality, perception, time, and filial affection in a clear, ruminative voice that remembers and imagines at the same time."--Christopher Howell

When Candice Curry was a little girl, she put her hand in her father's back pocket so that she wouldn't get lost in large crowds. Little did she know that as she followed him, he was plying his trade: conning people. Her family drove stolen cars, lived in stolen houses, and shopped with stolen credit cards. Drug use was regular, as were visits from strange people who were trying to track her father down. Though she eventually cut ties with her father, Candice could not ignore the scars that were left from her childhood. This is her story, one steeped in secrets but one that, ultimately, led her to a place of forgiveness and freedom. As she struggles to understand her criminal father, as well as her own imperfect life, Candice comes to realize that we are not defined by our circumstances but rather by how we react to those circumstances. She's found peace in the knowledge that God doesn't love us because we're perfect--but because he is.

Maria Toorpakai hails from Pakistan's violently oppressive northwest tribal region, where the idea of women playing sports is considered haram-un-Islamic--forbidden--and girls rarely leave their homes. But she did, passing as a boy in order to play the sports she loved, thus becoming a lightning rod of freedom in her country's fierce battle over women's rights. "Maria Toorpakai is a true inspiration, a pioneer for millions of other women struggling to pave their own paths to autonomy, fulfillment, and genuine personhood." --Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, A Thousand Splendid Suns, and And the Mountains Echoed A Different Kind of Daughter tells of Maria's harrowing journey to play the sport she knew was her destiny, first living as a boy and roaming the violent back alleys of the frontier city of Peshawar, rising to become the number one female squash player in Pakistan. For Maria, squash was more than liberation-it was salvation. But it was also a death sentence, thrusting her into the national spotlight and the crosshairs of the Taliban, who wanted Maria and her family dead. Maria knew her only chance of survival was to flee the country. Enter Jonathon Power, the first North American to earn the title of top squash player in the world, and the only person to heed Maria's plea for help. Recognizing her determination and talent, Jonathon invited Maria to train and compete internationally in Canada. After years of living on the run from the Taliban, Maria packed up and left the only place she had ever known to move halfway across the globe and pursue her dream. Now Maria is well on the way to becoming a world champion as she continues to be a voice for oppressed women everywhere.

Henry Viii S True Daughter written by Wendy J Dunn and has been published by Pen and Sword History this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-02-01 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

The lives of Tudor women often offer faint but fascinating footnotes on the pages of history. The life of Catherine – or Katryn as her husband would one day pen her name – Carey, the daughter of Mary Boleyn and, as the weight of evidence suggests, Henry VIII, is one of those footnotes. As the possible daughter of Henry VIII, the niece of Anne Boleyn and the favourite of Elizabeth I, Catherine’s life offers us a unique perspective on the reigns of Henry and his children. In this book, Wendy J. Dunn takes these brief details of Catherine’s life and turns them into a rich account of a woman who deserves her story told. Following the faint trail provided of her life from her earliest years to her death in service to Queen Elizabeth, Dunn examines the evidence of Catherine’s parentage and views her world through the lens of her relationship with the royal family she served. This book presents an important story of a woman who saw and experienced much tragedy and political turmoil during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, and Mary I – all of which prepared her to take on the vital role of one of Elizabeth I closest and most trusted women. It also prepared her to become the wife of one of Elizabeth's privy councillors – a man also trusted and relied on by the queen. Catherine served Elizabeth during the uncertain and challenging first years of her reign, a time when there was a question mark over whether she would succeed as queen regnant after the failures of England's first crowned regnant, her sister Mary. Through immense research and placing her in the context of her period, HENRY VIII’S TRUE DAUGHTER: CATHERINE CAREY, A TUDOR LIFE draws Catherine out of the shadows of history to take her true place as the daughter of Henry VIII and shows how vital women like Catherine were to Elizabeth and the ultimate victory of her reign.
