Author Kurt James over the years has complied a vast knowledge of the state of Wyoming. Wyoming was nicknamed the "Equality State" or as some like to call it the "Cowboy State." In the beginning, he used these historical and fun facts to be weaved into his fictional adventure stories of forever blue skies and dusty frontiers, bringing authenticity to his novels. Recently Kurt James fan base has been asking for him to make available his research in book form so they can even learn more about Wyoming. This book is the effort of many years of study, investigation, and exploring the Rocky Mountains, ghost towns, and long forgotten cemeteries. High Lonesome is a collection of historical essays, poems, and photographs of ghost towns found along Wyoming's southern corridor from East to West. The first section, No Services, is constructed as a literary and visual tour of these towns, beginning with easternmost Old Sherman and ending with westernmost Piedmont. This section of the book chronicles the boom and bust cycles that provided these towns with their reason for being and then revoked it when mines played out, rail lines shifted, the railroad changed to diesel engines, and new highways were constructed. The second section of the book, Letters to Maeva, is a collection of epistolary poems based on the life of a Norwegian immigrant who came to Wyoming to work the mines, transitioned to work with the Union Pacific railroad, and eventually homesteaded south of Laramie City. There is very little surviving information about his life, other than the above details and a few personal effects. Letters to Maeva is, in part, fictionalized, in order to give the reader a glimpse into the lives of those immigrants who built Wyoming from the prairie up, who lived and died here, fading into obscurity and anonymity, their stories lost to time in a foreign land.
