The Girl on the Via Flaminia, first published in 1949, is a novel of life in Rome, Italy, shortly after the end of World War II. Allied troops occupy the city and the Italians struggle to cope with the soldier’s presence while at the same time beginning the slow process of rebuilding their lives and their devastated country. One soldier arranges to share an apartment with an Italian women he has met by pretending they are married...but the situation soon becomes complicated. The Girl on the Via Flaminia was the basis for the 1953 movie “Act of Love,” starring Kirk Douglas (although the setting in the movie was post-war France).

Over the course of seven decades, Circle in the Square theatre profoundly changed ideas of what American theatre could be. Founded by Theodore Mann and Jose Quintero in an abandoned Off-Broadway nightclub just after WWII, it was a catalyst for the Off-Broadway movement. The building had a unique arena-shaped performance space that became Circle in the Square theatre, New York's first Off-Broadway arena stage and currently Broadway's only arena stage. "The end of the Second World War saw the emergence in Italy of the neorealism movement, which produced a number of films characterized by stories set among the poor and working class, often shot on location using non-professional actors. In this study Christopher Wagstaff provides an in-depth analysis of neorealist film, focusing on three films that have had a major impact on filmmakers and audiences around the world: Roberto Rossellini's Roma città aperta and Paisà and Vittorio De Sica's Ladri di biciclette.
