And even the most mendacious of eighteenth-century memoirs hardly match the rancour with which writers like M. Taine have ransacked the rag-bags of history for materials to malign him. In repelling such charges it is hardly possible not to write as an advocate or to avoid repetitions of the same kind of disproof. For the accusations themselves have a certain horrid family likeness, and in dismembering an octopus there is little scope for variety of stroke. Other material of value is contained in the publications of the Societe des Amis des Noirs, in the pamphlets and newspapers of Brissot's opponents, in letters and reports found among the correspondence between the French and English Foreign Offices, preserved at the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres at Paris, in judicial and police reports at the Archives Nationals; and finally in the Craigie Papers among the Antiquarian Society collections at Worcester, Massachusetts, and the Scioto Papers in the collections of the New York Historical Society.
