And at Camp Polk no one knew anything at all about Fordache Arceneau because he spoke only Cajun, which is what he was. These met in basic training and formed a community of three they called "the neighborhood." They fought together on Guadalcanal and then went back to the lives they had known before World War II. Doops was still adamant about not being baptized, claiming there weren't any real Baptists left to do the job. Then Fordache was accused of a brutal murder and the neighborhood--bound by love and based on understanding--faced its ultimate test in a small southern courtroom in 1952.
