Excerpt from The Glasgow Naturalist, Vol. 4: The Journal of the Natural History Society of Glasgow (Including the Transactions and Proceedings of the Society, Third Series) Castle Loch lies in a moorland district in the Parish of Mochrum and County of Wigtown. Extending to 287 acres, it is one of the largest of a group of lochs lying within two miles of Luce Bay to which it is connected by the Craignarget Burn. It has an average depth of ten feet, and, unlike the neighbouring loch of Mochrum, its waters have a peculiar muddy appearance, which is constant. On an island at the north-east corner stands the ruins of an old castle, from which the loch no doubt takes its name, and the remaining islets are, for the most part, mere rocks, showing but a few feet above the water. To the visitor from Glasgow it is easy of access by way of Dunragit and Kirkcowan, and can be done in one day. The district is a rich one for birds, which are carefully protected, without distinction of species, by order of the proprietor, the Marquis of Bute. The object of our visit was to study the Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) in its summer quarters, and, if possible, to obtain photographs of its domestic economy. For either purpose it would be difficult to conceive a more ideal place. The distribution of this species and its near relative, the Shag (Phalacrocorax graculus), in the Clyde Area, presents some interesting features. Excerpt from The Glasgow Naturalist, 1915, Vol. 7: The Journal of the Natural History Society of Glasgow (Including the Transactions and Proceedings of the Society, Third Series) The hydroid in question was discovered, and described (trans. Linn. Soc., 1857, Vol. 22, pp. 113 as a, new genus and species, by Gosse who found a vigorous colony growing round the mouth of a Sabella tube in one of his aquaria. He gave a very lively account of the quaint mannikin-like individuals, and of their grotesque bending and swaying antics round the mouth of the tube, and he not inappropriately named his new genus Lam, or domestic god of the Sabelh'ds. The most striking feature of the genus is the possession of only two tentacles springing from one side of the base of a highly movable bilabiate proboscis, which is separated by a slight constriction from the rest of the body. Excerpt from The Glasgow Naturalist, Vol. 2: The Journal of the Natural History Society of Glasgow According to a note in the Glasgow Evening Times of June 19th, there seems to be a great scarcity of Sedge-Warblers at their usual haunts this year. Doubtless the severe weather we experienced in the spring of last year, when the Sedge-Warbler was due, was greatly to blame for the scarcity last season, and the decrease this year is the result. Although this bird may be scarce throughout the country, this year at Possil they are in greater numbers than in the previous year. The Sedge-Warbler is well known not only from its voluminous song during morning and evening, but also from its restless habits. I find that especially on its arrival, it is one of the most difficult birds to follow, on account of its rapid flights in and out amongst the low growths of the willows or thick vegetation. I found that, by lying concealed near some favourite bush, or near the reeds frequented by the birds, I was always sure of seeing them closely, if I got to the marsh before sunrise. When discovered, all chance of a second interview at close quarters was gone. This shyness seems to last until the nesting takes place, when they appear more openly and fearlessly either on the lower branches of the willows or clinging to the tall reeds or equiseta, from which they pour forth their loud song.
