The discussion of this question by Coleridge and De Quincey led those writers from their different points of view to diametrically opposite conclusions. Coleridge solemnly adjured the aspirant to literary distinction - "Never pursue literature as a trade!" while De Quincey as solemnly declared one point to be clear to his judgment - "that literature must decay, unless we have a class wholly dedicated to that service, not pursuing it as an amusement, only with weary and pre-occupied minds."
