Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from The Glenns: A Family History In a merely worldly View, the reasoning of the last mentioned lady, that her son would probably be better cared for by his uncle than by her new husband and herself, was not far from correct. For no father ever watched more carefully or guarded more scrupulously the education of his son, than did Abram that of both his nephews. His 'want of experience and solitary habits may, in a measure, have unfitted him for the task of guide and protector; but so far as his knowledge and ability extended, no parent could exceed him in zeal and vigilance. If he erred culpably in anything, it was in allowing both his wards a rather free command of money. He thought, and very correctly, that denying them could but produce one of two re sults, it would either lower their standard of self-respect, thus drfing their characters an irreparable injury, by the comparison they would not fail to make between their own stinted allowance and the more liberal supply of their companions - or it would tempt them to equivocal and perhaps criminal means of obtaining that which their boyish feelings represented as indispensable. In either event their characters would be seriously, perhaps per manently Injured, and in the one case probably as vitally as in the other. He knew the pride of the race, and he was too sen sible a man not to know that what would ruin a boy of one temperament, would only develope and improve one of another. He had never fallen into the stupid, pedagogical mistake founded upon the astonishing wisdom of the truism, that boys are boys - that all children must be subjected alike to the same discipline. He was accordingly sensible that refusing his wards the means of gratifying their harmless, boyish wants, would so touch their pride and beat their naturally warm blood, that they might be hurried into faults for'whichyears of repentance could not atone. 'I have always thought Gleneagles is one of the greatest places in the world to play golf' - Jack Nicklaus Tracing the history of the Ryder Cup back to that famous forerunner match at Gleneagles in 1921, this book intertwines the histories of the coveted prize with the five-star resort's own rich heritage, on and off the course. Through a series of over 80 in-depth interviews with an array of national and international celebrities, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Sir Jackie Stewart, Andy Murray and Stephen Hendry, Jewel in the Glen reveals what the Ryder Cup and Gleneagles means to them while examining the impact of the tournament on the local community and the wider Scottish society, culture, and economy. With a foreword from golf's greatest player, Jack Nicklaus, designer of the Ryder Cup 2014 course, The PGA Centenary, and a hole-byhole guide by Ryder Cup legend Colin Montgomerie, this volume paints a unique and absorbing portrait of Gleneagles and Scottish golf as a whole.

Stretching for 170 miles across northern Arizona and southern Utah, Lake Powell is both a vacationer's paradise and the second-largest reservoir in the Western Hemisphere. Yet few visitors to the lake today are aware of the lost world that lies beneath its crystal waters. Once an enchanted landscape of sandstone cliffs and secret crevices, Glen Canyon has been but a memory since the damming of the Colorado River near Page, Arizona, in 1963. Often called "the place no one knew," Glen Canyon was in fact explored by thousands of visitors—including dozens of writers—before the dam's completion. River runner Mathew Gross has combed the literature of Glen Canyon to assemble this wide-ranging look at the history of this now-submerged natural treasure, the first book to bring together these voices of remembrance. Beginning with the first known written report of Glen Canyon in an eighteenth-century missionary journal, Gross has selected accounts of the canyon from both before and after the dam. Included are some of the West's best-known writers—Zane Grey and Katie Lee, Edward Abbey and Ellen Meloy—as well as Pulitzer Prize winners John McPhee and Wallace Stegner. Other authors range from David Brower, director of the Sierra Club when the dam was built, to Floyd Dominy, the federal bureaucrat responsible for the dam. The Glen Canyon Reader is a book that may be read straight through as entertaining and informative history. But as Gross suggests, "Perhaps more pleasurable is to flip through these pages, to poke around and explore, as one would have done in Glen Canyon . . . to visit and revisit the places contained in this book, these cool glens and embracing alcoves and hidden grottos, these canyons and dreams and ghosts that will always, always be with us."
