The God Myth and Reality: Jake McCoy, construction worker and young man grew up in northern Indiana farm country. He was engaged to a beautiful young woman, Jan, who was three months pregnant and they were engaged to be married, live a wonderful life, share their religious beliefs, and enjoy Midwestern life to the fullest that their backgrounds would allow. Madly in love, feeling on top of the world, planning a fantastic life together, they did not realize a catastrophe was headed their way. Jan was assaulted, raped, lost her pregnancy and progressed into a severe depression which ended up with the loss of her life. Jake, angry, depressed and grieving blamed God for causing this and wondered why a caring God would do such a thing to them. He lost his belief in God, became bitter with religion and questioned whether there was a God or just science and the earth. He joined the Navy, suppressing his feelings, and yet wondering if there really is a God or Supreme Being. His life would be a long journey of investigation, exploring possibilities and wondering if God was real, science, or imagination. Many questions can be answered, but in the end it is a question of whether you believe or don’t believe—that is the question.

The Bible contains a set of beliefs that support the faith of a core group who compiled the work. They believe there is a God and in the added later addition of the New Testament, that story grew to become more about an assumed son of God the father. The Bible vigorously supports these two beliefs that provide religions with a chain of stories that while they inspire, also mislead and confuse. The opinions espoused in both cases are in fact myths that are can only be assumed to be true. In time these have become beliefs that have greatly influenced global attitudes. To unravel the fictions religions propose are true; as an intelligent species, we have the ability to open our collective eyes and consciously break free of the superstition, fear and blind faith a religious way of thinking has generated within us. Religions have caused a biased mindset to permeate and distort the thinking of many influential members in every population across the world. The evolution of this process has conditioned humanity for thousands of years to blindly accept that the intention behind any and all religious doctrines is to uplift our behaviour. The real truth, however, is that religion promotes a self-righteous paternalism that continues to outweigh a sense of true fellowship those religions claim is their primary purpose. The religious need to realise that they do not have anything like a monopoly of the truth; nor is moral behaviour a natural bi-product of religious doctrine. Through the denigration and rejection of the opinions of non-believers, this has seen them create and entrench a system of fear driven blind faith in the impossible. Believing in an external God is simply a crutch for those who feel they have a need for it to lean on. What would be far more beneficial is our knowing we belong to a civilisation that is supportive and harmonious and in which we don't ever feel alone and ignored. We miss out on this by being misled by a nave way of thinking that blindly accepts the delusions of a faith-based religion, this process has been going on for too long. Wars are but one negative consequence of believing in assumptions that make no sense. What is patently obvious is that there is no male God above us that is monitoring and judging our lives. However, there is an attitude within us humanity can usefully revere; it is the power that a man told us about in a single sentence two thousand years ago. He said - "God is love and love is God." Jesus was speaking about an under-nurtured capacity we each have within us. We have ignored this wisdom due to the misguided belief of one man who changed his name from Saul to Paul and claimed Jesus was a Son of his God. It was Paul's continuing promotion of an ancient external God, a God who never existed, that caused us to turn away from the non-physical powers that Jesus said we each have within us. With the full sense of the power of love fully reborn, the human race would again be able to move mountains and build pyramids. And, more importantly, live in harmony with the rest of humanity.

Lord Lao, first known as the philosopher Laozi, the purported author of the Daode jing, later became an immortal, a messiah, and high god of Daoism. Laozi, divinized during the Han dynasty and in early Daoist movements, reached his highest level of veneration under the Tang when the rulers honored him as a royal ancestor. In subsequent eras he remained prominent and is still a major deity in China today. Livia Kohn's two-part study first traces the historical development of Lord Lao and the roles he played at different times for different believers. Part Two is based on one of Lord Lao's major hagiographies, the twelfth-century Youlong zhuan (Like Unto a Dragon), and studies the complex myth surrounding him. Lord Lao appears in eight distinct mythical roles, each associated with a particular phase in his life: He is the creator of the universe, bringer of cosmic order, teacher of dynasties, and the divine made flesh on earth. He is also the converter of the barbarians, the source of major Daoist revelations, and the god of Great Peace and political harmony. Comparing his story with related Confucian, Buddhist, and Western mythic tropes, Kohn illuminates the dynamics of the Daoist tale and persuades us to appreciate Lord Lao as a key deity of traditional China. Includes illustrations and tables. Livia Kohn is Professor of Religion and East Asian Studies, Boston University; Adjunct Professor of Chinese Studies, Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary; and Visiting Professor of Japanese Religion, Stanford Center for Technology and Innovation, Kyoto, Japan. Her most recent book is Lao-tzu and the Tao-te-ching.

An ever-growing number of Christians are becoming more and more uncomfortable with the tenets of the church, the stories of the Bible, and the church's worldview. Statistics show that these feelings easily escalate into a crisis of faith, and for now their predicament is being resolved by leaving the church. This book will certainly help dealing with the crisis by showing that the language of faith is built by a web of metaphors taken from the Ancient Near East. We do not need to take biblical language literally, but as parables for human values in need to be assessed critically.
