Recent genetic evidence suggests that they might be related to elephants, hyraxes, and sea cows (amongst others), rather than to moles. The Juliana's golden moles live in only three places in South Africa. Two of these locations are state-owned nature conservation areas. The third place, the Bronberg mountain range in the east of Pretoria, is part of a Green Belt protected area which is privately owned, but where strict development regulations are in place.
