Laozi, literally "Old Master," probably lived during the Warring States period of the 4th century BCE. This was an era in ancient Chinese history characterized by war, as well as bureaucratic and military reforms and consolidation, leading to the first unified Chinese empire known as the Qin dynasty. Laozi was an official in the imperial archives, a scholar who worked as the Keeper of the archives for the royal court of Zhou. This allowed him broad access to the works of the Yellow Emperor and other classics of the time. Laozi never opened a formal school but attracted a large number of students and loyal disciples. Laozi grew weary of the moral decay of life in Chengzhou and, noting the kingdom's decline, travelled west to live as a hermit in the unsettled frontier at an advanced age. At the western gate he was recognized by the guard Yinxi. The sentry asked the old master to record his wisdom for the good of the country before he would be permitted to pass. The text Laozi wrote was the Tao Te Ching.

Chinese people are known for being philosophical. A person doesn't necessarily have to be religious in order to be philosophical. You just have to learn the best ways to live your life so that you can have a more prosperous future. A classic Chinese manual entitled "Tao Te Ching" teaches people the art of living and the path you must take in order to find fulfillment in your life. This classic Chinese text was written by a sage named Laozi, also known as Lao Tzu. Laozi means "Old Master" in Chinese. Some people like to refer to this classic Chinese text as Laozi instead of Tao Te Ching because they have so much respect for the author. The sage, Laozi, is believed to have lived around 600 B.C. In his professional life, he worked as a record keeper for the Zhou Dynasty Court. However, historians are still unsure about the exact date and time when the Tao Te Ching was actually written. The only thing they know is that the oldest Chinese texts that were excavated dates back to sometime in the late 4th century B.C. Even though they were originally written in the 6th century, the texts that were excavated in the 4th century are likely rewritten texts. The Tao Te Ching is one of the main Chinese classic texts that promote the religious and philosophical principles of Taoism. It is the most fundamental book of text that is studied by all Taoists. It is also a strong influence on other Chinese schools that teach Confucianism, Legalism and Chinese Buddhism. Chinese painters, poets, gardeners and calligraphers use the philosophies of the book as a source of inspiration. The influence of the Tao Te Ching has spread far throughout Eastern Asia and is one of the most translated books ever written in the history of literature. In Roman culture, the book was transcribed using the Wade-Giles Romanization system. They transcribed the title as "Daodejing." The words "Dao" and "Tao" both mean "the way." The words "De" and "Te" both mean inner strength or virtuosity. And finally, the words "Jing" and "Ching" mean "classic" or "the great book." Therefore, the translation of Tao Te Ching and Daodejing is said to be "The Classic Way to Inner Strength." In other words, if you learn the philosophies in this book then you will have the knowledge of finding the right path to strength and happiness. Tao Te Ching is not a long book to read by any means. It is only 5,000 Chinese characters long with about 81 very brief sections or chapters. The writing is of a classical form of Chinese called zhuanshu. As the centuries went by, the later versions were written in Lishu and Kaishu. As for the chapters, no one knows if the separated chapters were originally placed there by Laozi or if they were added later on. Some people think they were added later on as a way to help memorize the information and add commentary. The whole book is divided into two main parts. The first part is the Tao Ching, which goes from chapter 1 to chapter 37. The second part is the Te Ching, which goes from chapter 38 to chapter 81. Some even refer to this style of writing as laconic and poetic because of its brief chapters and intentional contradictions. This writing is strategic in a sense because it creates memorable phrases and then forces the reader to create their own reconciliations from all the supposed contradictions. This is why it takes some people their entire lives to fully understand the message behind the text. For others, they never fully grasp it.

In the real world, everything appears only as it is, neither beautiful or ugly, big or small. This is the true nature of things. One cannot know the Dào by the use of the thinking mind. So the Dào cannot be seen from the perspective of belief, philosophy, or science. It can only be known or realized with the mind in complete silence and presence.

"Previously published as " Lao Tzu's TAO TE KING 老子道德經 " The Chinese ideogram 道 TAO can be translated as "the Way", which can mean either the right path to follow in the journey of life, the journey of knowledge, or simply 'the way things go'. The concept of Tao has been used since ancient times in Chinese Philosophy, Religion, and Spirituality, to indicate the infinite principle of creation, the origin of good and evil, of everything that exists, the beginning of the existence of all beings. The TAO TE CHING is an ancient Chinese manuscript about the Tao and it tries to explain in simple words a concept that is not easily intelligible, as it is infinite, therefore it is not easy to define. The legendary author of the Tao Te Ching, LAO TZU was an old wise man who lived in the centuries between the 6th and 5th BC, and he is still revered today as a Saint. With his Book of the Tao, Lao Tzu is considered the founder of the School of Thought known as TAOISM. S.A.Julien, J.Legge, S.Williams, P.Carus, D.T.Suzuki, T.F.Wade, H.A.Giles, D.Goddard, are among the most eminent sinologists and translators of the Tao Te Ching, in the years between the late 18th century and early 1900. Wade and Giles give their name to the transliteration, or romanization (the transcription of the pronunciation of Chinese ideograms in the letters of the Latin alphabet) in use until 1979, the year in which the modern Pinyin (ISO) system was adopted, the system that is also used on the Internet. The romanization of the Chinese title of the book: 《老子道德經》 (Wade-Giles: "Lao Tzu Tao Te Ching"), in Pinyin Chinese, is: "Lao Zi DAO DE JING". In this book, I have kept the pronunciation with which the Tao Te Ching has spread, translated into all the languages of the world, and has been known by mine and by past generations. This edition, to which I have added for Tao lovers and scholars, the original full text in Chinese Ideograms, and Romanization, is taken from the book Tao & Wu Wei (Brentano's Publishers, New York, 1919), which included D.Goddard's original English translation of the Tao Teh King, and a short essay on Taoism "Wu Wei", by Dutch sinologist, writer and translator Henri Borel (1869-1933). This book does not include Borel's Wu Wei. In 1939 D.Goddard became a publisher himself and he published a different translation of the Tao Teh King, made in collaboration with Bhikshu Wai-Tao, which still included the Wu Wei, with the addition of the "Notes on Taoist Philosophy and Religion" by Dr. Kiang Kang-Hu. The reason why I chose, among the many, the English translation by D. Goddard, is because, in my opinion, it is the simplest and the most literal. DWIGHT GODDARD (1861-1939), was an American writer and translator, who became a pioneer in the American Zen Buddhist movement. "The publication of the texts marked the end of a fascinating journey on the part of Goddard from engineer, to Christian missionary and minister, to student, to practitioner of Zen Buddhism. The best record of this journey is Goddard's own writings." (R.Aitken). With an innumerable series of essays, translations, and collections of sacred texts, first of all, "A Buddhist Bible" (1932), he inspired the greatest poets of the Beat Generation, like Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg.
