When was the last time you took a moment to consider the purpose and effectiveness of your children's sermons? After all, nothing is more important than sowing the seeds of faith early in life. In this comprehensive look at all aspects of preaching the gospel to young people, Richard Coleman challenges you to examine your approach with a critical eye and gives you plenty of practical guidance for developing simple, direct messages that help children form a relationship with Jesus Christ. In the first section of Gospel-Telling, Coleman discusses what constitutes meaningful children's sermons, offering a thoughtful rationale for the idea that we must proclaim the gospel so youngsters experience God's love. You'll learn how you can mine your own experience for inspiration and proclaim gospel stories that flow from your specific circumstances. Then in the second portion of the book you'll see this process at work, with over thirty examples illustrating several different types of children's sermons. Whether you're a pastor, Christian educator, or engaged in the teaching ministry, you're sure to profit from the practical advice and in-depth reflection in these pages. With Gospel-Telling, you'll be equipped to share with young people the good news -- with creativity and theological integrity. Gospel-Telling is an enriching book that treats children with the spiritual respect they deserve. Richard Coleman understands the transformative language of children -- play and metaphor -- and shows how our weekly children's sermons can reach the heart of the child and not simply the mind of the adult. This is a must-have resource for educators and pastors alike. Mickie O'Donnell Executive Director, Children's Ministries of America Richard Coleman understands the core of the biblical message as well as the learning processes of children and puts them together in theory and practice. This is a valuable treatment of a too long neglected topic. Rev. Ray Kostulias Pastor, First Congregational Church Park Ridge, New Jersey Author of Character Witness and I Witness Richard J. Coleman has served as the teaching minister of a university church, the pastor of a small-town congregation, and the director of an interdenominational inner-city Christian center. He has published children's sermons, leadership training articles, and seasonal devotionals, as well as books on the dialogue between science and theology and the dialogue between Evangelicals and Liberals. Coleman is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Princeton Theological Seminary.

From the Foreword. ...We have had in recent years several notable Courses of Lyman Beecher Lectures discussing the relation of the pulpit to the Great War and to the vast and intricate problems which it created. Dr. John Kelman lectured on "The War and Preaching;" Dr. Henry Sloane Coffin considered the issues involved "In a Day of Social Rebuilding." Dr. William P. Merrill considered "The Freedom of the Preacher" as affected by recent developments. We have had other courses dealing particularly with the theological, the educational, the social phases of the minister's vocation in these grave times upon which we have fallen. We have not had for thirty years a series of Lyman Beecher Lectures dealing directly with the technique of preaching. It has seemed fitting therefore that as a teacher of homiletics and as one whose main office for many years has been that of preaching, I should take up in a more intimate way the making of a sermon. I have not attempted anything so ambitious as a thoroughgoing treatise on homiletics. This book contains a series of lectures filled mainly with practical suggestions as to "the art of preaching." I have retained the form of direct personal address as best suited to the purpose in mind. The expressions which have come from the students who heard the lectures have encouraged me to hope that these words may have value for some of my brother ministers in active service who are sharing in the heat and burden of a day made difficult to all of us as preachers by the tense and troubled conditions of our modern life. The reluctance of multitudes of thoughtful people to "sit under our preaching" after the manner of their more patient forefathers, becomes a kind of challenge to do our bit in a more interesting and a more effective way. How difficult a task it is I have learned full well by oft-repeated, humbling experiences. Yet in the face of everything, I still believe with all my heart (as I believed thirty-three years ago when I was first ordained) that to preach the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ is the highest office and the most alluring interest to which any human being can be called.

There are few problems in the contemporary church today that can match terrible preaching, and the poor exposition of the word of God. Perkins had much the same problem in his own day and in his own city. In this volume, written specially for ministers, he provides a foundation of bible truths to teach the manner in which ministers may preach effectively and faithfully to their congregations, as well as showing Christians how they may read their bible with profit and understanding. This is a classic work that should be at the side of every preacher and every student of the bible to be read again and again. This work is not a scan or facsimile and has been made easy to read with an active table of contents for electronic versions.
