2023 Reprint of the 1896 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The most celebrated novelist of all time, the author of Anna Karenina and War and Peace, retells "the greatest story ever told," integrating the four Gospels into a single twelve-chapter narrative of the life of Jesus. Based on his study of early Christian texts, Leo Tolstoy's remarkable The Gospel in Brief makes accessible the powerful, mystical truth of Jesus's spiritual teaching, stripped of artificial church doctrine. The Gospel in Brief is a synthesis of the four gospels of the New Testament into one narrative of the life of. It is notable in that it excludes many of the supernatural aspects of the original gospels, such as their claims of Jesus's divine origins and ability to perform miracles. Instead, the work focuses on Jesus's teachings to his followers, presumably those which Tolstoy found most compelling. The Gospel in Brief is thought by some to be deeply reflective of Tolstoy's own interpretation of Christianity.

Written in 1883, 'The Gospel in brief' is Tolstoy's harmonization of the four Christian gospels into one. So now we have Matthew, Mark, Luke, John - and Tolstoy. It is, he says, 'an examination of Christian teaching not according to the church's interpretations, but solely according to what has come down to us of Christ's teaching, as ascribed to him in the gospels.' That which Tolstoy retains from the originals, and that which he leaves out, tells us much about what he regards as essential Christianity. So here we find Tolstoy not concerned with events, but with the teaching; for it is the teaching that gives meaning to life. In his version, there is no place for the famous birth story; the healing miracles or Christ's resurrection. In Tolstoy's view, these were put there to persuade people of Christ's divinity, and are therefore superfluous. We should not be focusing on Christ the Son of God, but on Christ the teacher; and to this end, Tolstoy always refers to Jesus' disciples as 'pupils'. He also never misses a chance to place the Orthodox Church firmly with Christ's opponents. He calls the Scribes 'Orthodox professors' and refers to the teachers of the law, simply as 'Orthodox.' We also find expressed clearly here the 5 commands that Tolstoy regarded as the essence of the gospel: 1 Do not be angry, but live at peace with all men. 2 Do not indulge yourself in sexual gratification. 3 Do not promise anything on oath to anyone. 4 Do not resist evil, do not judge and do not go to law. 5 Make no distinction of nationality, but love foreigners as your own people. Will the church like this version? Tolstoy doubts it, and expects a response: 'If they will not disavow their lies, only one thing remains for them: to persecute me - for which I, completing what I have written, prepare myself with joy and with fear of my own weakness.' But Tolstoy was both too aristocratic and too famous to be seriously harmed. Simon Parke, author of The One Minute Mystic

Seeking answers to "the problem of life," Tolstoy reinterpreted the first four books of the New Testament to create a single, integrated version of Christ's philosophy. The Russian author disregarded issues related to Jesus's divinity, focusing strictly on his words and teachings, for a remarkably modern meditation on spirituality.

Leo Tolstoy is famous the world over for his epic novels of Russian history and society. But during the last 30 years of his life Tolstoy devoted himself to spiritual matters in an attempt to return Christianity to the fundamental teachings of Christ, shorn of both biblical additions and interpolations, and the obfuscating hand of Church dogma. 'The Gospel in Brief' is the culmination of this long endeavour, a composite account taken only from the Four Gospels. Working with the oldest original Greek versions, Tolstoy set aside all accounts of miracles, genealogies, and prophecies, seeking the core philosophy of Jesus of Nazareth, and a solution - in the words of Christ himself - to "the problem of life." The result is a compelling account of a teacher whose basic message was the Unity of all existence: God is the giver of life, and within all things. For Tolstoy, acknowledgement of this central fact, that "the Kingdom of God is Within You," immanent in all existence, bestows liberation from the illusions of time and selfhood, and makes easy Christ's admonition to "love God, and your neighbour as yourself" The Aziloth edition is fully annotated, allowing each section of Tolstoy's compilation to be related directly to the relevant Gospel passage. A book that will uplift and give new direction to both Christian and agnostic alike.
