Excerpt from The Gospel-Message: Or Essays, Addresses, Suggestions, and Warnings on the Different Aspects of Christian Missions to Non-Christian Races and Peoples MY heartfelt desire is, at the age of seventy-five, to throw together in a collective form my already published Addresses, Essays, and Warnings, with emendations and enlargements up to the year 1895, and to add others on subjects not previously handled. My criticisms must necessarily be severe and outspoken, because I feel the necessity. The work of an Evangelist is a Divine Call, not a mere worldly profession: it requires the consecration in the morning Of life of at! The faculties, talents, time, and Gifts, of the consecrated man or woman: they should not descend to vulgar domestic cares until they have given one decade exclusively to their Master's Service. It is throwing words away to suggest reforms in a Missionary committee, where nearly every member of committee or Secretary, has relations, or connections, or intimate friends, who would be affected thereby. Evangelization has become a great family concern. In the Middle Ages Monastic establishments by the same gradual degradation fell down from the high Ideal, because the members of those Associations failed to reform themselves. Now is the time for Missionary Associations, many of whom are about to complete their century of existence, to reform abuses, and adapt themselves to the new requirements, before the day of their visitation has passed, and they are absorbed into a Church-organization, which will be totally unable to conduct Missionary Operations. Some of these papers may be read with profit at Ladies' work parties: copies of the book will be sent to all Training Colleges. It is part of current missiological orthodoxy that newly created churches should obtain independence from cross-cultural missionaries as soon as possible. It is not often realised that much Victorian missionary thinking shared that objective. This important new work examines the ideal of the self-governing church in the Victorian period through a study of the official mind of the Church Missionary Society. The study begins with an examination of Henry Venn's, the famous CMS Secretary, commitment to self-supporting, self-propagating and self-governing churches. Was he a lonely figure battling against the accepted wisdom of the mid-Victorian period? The author argues that he was not, and was, if anything a slightly conservative spokesman for much current wisdom. Far from his views being abandoned at his death, they were the accepted orthodoxy within CMS until the end of the century. Although they came under increasing attack in the nineties, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century, particularly under the influence of Eugune Stock, that they were finally abandoned. The importance of this study lies not only in its ability to explain Victorian missionary development, but also because it takes on board the age-old issue of how quickly should a church become self-governing.

David Hilliard's God's Gentlemen, originally published in 1978, remains the only detached and detailed historical analysis of the work of the Melanesian Mission. Starting with its New Zealand beginnings and its Norfolk Island years (1867-1920), the work follows the Mission's shift of headquarters to the Solomon Islands and on until the beginning of the Second World War. The Mission, which grew out of the personal vision of the first Church of England Bishop of New Zealand, George Selwyn, formally defined its field of work as 'the Islands of Melanesia' although its activities were confined almost entirely to the island groups that now make up Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. The Diocese of Melanesia was a fully constituent diocese of the Anglican Church of New Zealand from its formation in 1861 until the creation of the autonomous Church of the Province of Melanesia in 1975. Based on a wide range of sources, God's Gentleman is the inner history of the slow growth of an important and genuinely Melanesian church.
