This volume investigates the early, second-century reception of the Fourth Gospel. This is an era when its fortunes are surrounded by silence and mystery. It was assumed, until quite recently, that Gnostic and other so-called heterodox groups were the first ones to appreciate this gospel, and hence the mainstream Christians avoided using it until Irenaeus rescued it for the church. Lately, this view has been challenged by several scholars for several reasons. The contributions in this volume, written by leading specialists in their respective fields, offer an approachable, fresh, comprehensive and up-to-date view of the second-century reception of John s Gospel, in a situation where new understandings about various forms of early Christianity and its multiformity have started to emerge.

The essays collected here represent the cutting edge of study of the Fourth Gospel. They challenge widely held views about the Gospel and present new hypotheses about its origins and significance. Many papers employ new, narrative theological readings of John, while others challenge standard appraisals of the Gospel with new observations, new research, or new literary methods. Topics explored include a new appraisal of the authenticity of the sayings of Jesus in John; the witness of John to Palestinian messianism; evidence of the importance of the destruction of the Temple to John; the relationship of Luke and John; the reception of John in the second century church; the distinctive aspects of discipleship in John; the importance of Moses motifs in the depiction of the Johannine Christ. Several essays explore how the narrative of the Gospel contributes to the theology found in its expository passages. The book had its genesis at a conference held in Cambridge under the auspicies of the international center for biblical research at Tyndale House.

Written by an L. A. County homicide detective and former atheist, Cold-Case Christianity examines the claims of the New Testament using the skills and strategies of a hard-to-convince criminal investigator. Christianity could be defined as a “cold case”: it makes a claim about an event from the distant past for which there is little forensic evidence. In Cold-Case Christianity, J. Warner Wallace uses his nationally recognized skills as a homicide detective to look at the evidence and eyewitnesses behind Christian beliefs. Including gripping stories from his career and the visual techniques he developed in the courtroom, Wallace uses illustration to examine the powerful evidence that validates the claims of Christianity. A unique apologetic that speaks to readers’ intense interest in detective stories, Cold-Case Christianity inspires readers to have confidence in Christ as it prepares them to articulate the case for Christianity.

Readings from the Gospel of John are brought into all the other years, for major occasions like Christmas or Easter, and to help reflection about the meaning of Jesus' life and teaching. There are also several miracles (or 'sings') which are not mentioned in the other Gospels and can only be found in John, such as the wedding at Cana. A large proportion of the Gospel of John appears in Years A, B and C. The series' unique slant is that it asks readers to use their imagination 'to bring the Gospel to life.' It asks them to visualize themselves in the scenes that John describes in order to see the Gospels in a fresh and exciting way.

This book seeks to answer the following question: how did the doctrine of justification fare one hundred years after Paul’s death (c. AD 165)? This book argues that Paul’s view of justification by faith is present in the second century, a thesis that particularly challenges T. F. Torrance’s long-held notion that the Apostolic Fathers abandoned this doctrine (The Doctrine of Grace in the Apostolic Fathers, 1948). In the wake of Torrance’s work there has been a general consensus that the early fathers advocated works righteousness in opposition to Paul’s belief that an individual is justified before God by faith alone, but second-century writings do not support this claim. Each author examined—Clement of Rome, Ignatius of Antioch, Epistle to Diognetus, Odes of Solomon, and Justin Martyr—contends that faith is the only necessary prerequisite for justification, even if they do indicate the importance of virtuous living. This is the first major study on the doctrine of justification in the second century, thus filling a large lacuna in scholarship. With the copious amounts of research being conducted on justification, it is alarming that no work has been done on how the first interpreters of Paul received one of his trademark doctrines. It is assumed, wrongly, that the fathers were either uninterested in the doctrine or that they misunderstood the Apostle. Neither of these is the case. This book is timely in that it enters the fray of the justification debate from a neglected vantage point.
