Hymns are more than beautiful musical compositions; they provide us with a heightened language for praising and speaking to God, all while teaching us theology that reflects both the depth and complexity of Our Lord. Sacred hymns in our day have given way to “fifth-rate poetry set to fourth-rate music,” as C.S. Lewis once remarked. At times, the music used in worship can make us feel as though the culture is usurping the Church rather than being transfigured by it. There is a clear and present need to resurrect those distinctively different songs with a distinctively different vocabulary for people who want to live distinctive lives as followers of Christ. In these pages, Fr. George William Rutler introduces and reflects upon dozens of the greatest hymns written from the earliest years of the Church through the Twentieth Century. The text and composition of each hymn is included, as well as inspiring accounts of their authors and composers, fascinating stories and historical events connected with them, and notes on the significant contributions each one made to theology and music. Fr. Rutler has recovered here a rich musical legacy that will help us to give glory to our God who is Lord of all.

Excerpt from Hymns of the Kingdom of God: With Tunes Each generation of Christians emphasizes a particular aspect of the everlasting Gospel. Our own lays the stress upon the Kingdom of God. We have been led to believe that, as the Kingdom was the burden of our Lord's message, it should be the burden of His Church's prayer and praise. This book is an attempt to furnish the Church with a hymnal in which Christian communion with God is viewed as fellowship with the Father and the Son in the establishment of the Kingdom. The editors have sought to make a small collection of large hymns. We have carefully examined several thousand hymns which have found a place in the worship of English-speaking churches during the last two hundred years. We have respected the sacred canon of Christian experience. We have felt that the older and the more widely used a hymn is, the more suited is it to common worship, and the better adapted to manifest and to promote the unity of the Church of Christ. We have striven, however, to include only hymns which are poetically beautiful, winch express a normal and healthy spiritual experience, contain no divisive theology, and are specifically Christian in religion. In arranging the music we have been governed by the principle that it is better to select than to multiply tunes. The average congregation should find no difficulty in using all the tunes in this hook. Most of them are already familiar. There are some new tunes, but few of these are of recent composition. The great English composers of Church music of the last century are well represented, and the book contains a large number of older tunes, -traditional German, English, French, Welsh and Dutch melodies, and tunes from the Genevan, Scottish and American psalters. We have tried to set the hymns to those tunes which have proved best fitted to bring out their meaning with effectiveness and dignity. Wherever possible we have placed hymns of the same metre upon opposite pages in order to offer a choice of music. The text of each hymn has been traced back, as far as we were able, to its first edition. All changes have been carefully noted. Excerpt from The Christian Hymnal: A Choice Collection of Hymns and Tunes for Congregational and Social Worship The hymns, with a few exceptions, have been selected from the Christian Hymn Book, and embrace every variety of meter in that book. An index has been arranged, in which all the omitted hymns of the Christian Hymn Book are referred to pages in this book where suitable tunes may be found. Hence a complete adaptation to the entire Hymn Book is provided for, and this, of itself, renders the hymnal invaluable, as it contains 'a larger variety of metrical music than any other book now published. The three books of Isaac Watts hymns and songs are presented here complete: the verses - many informed by the Holy Bible - are a moving testimony to the author's talents and his supreme devotion to God. Containing hundreds of Watts' works, this compendium is a treat for believers seeking to appreciate the author's efforts. Commonly termed 'The Godfather of English Hymnody', Watts began a centuries long tradition of hymn writing, and conferred discipline and importance to what had before been a practice often occasional and disparate. Best known for songs such as 'Joy to the World', Watts was in actuality a learned man whose achievements - for instance in logic - extended beyond the realm of music. In terms of topic, the hymns in this volume range from praise to God, Biblical events, to meditations upon the lives and attainments of the saints, to the nature of Christian virtue and the wrongness of sins. The abandonment of vices and embracing of Christ is a recurring theme; the expressive verses an abiding lesson to Christian believers for all time. As a minister, Watts was able to put his words to congregations and receive a sense of what was important for the parishioners and churchgoers of his time. Many of Isaac Watts hymns and lyrics are present in church services in the present day, their enduring words synonymous with Christian devotion and Sunday choir singing. His influence in literature was also profound, and he is paid tribute in written works by Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll and many others. Isaac Watts spent a lifetime composing the finest hymns of his era. Upon his death, the honors in both the New England colonies and his home nation were abundant, with academia and churches alike dedicating buildings and places in his honor. His gift for lyrics, his immense knowledge of Bible scripture acquired through study of the Bible theology, and superb attitude of abiding devotional faith remain an inspiring beacon for Christians in the modern era.
