Machen's story was only one of many at the time to focus on Pan as a useful symbol for the power of nature and paganism.The Hill of Dreams is a semi-autobiographical novel by Arthur Machen. Generally thought to be Machen's greatest work, it was little noticed on its publication in 1907 save in a glowing review by Alfred Douglas.
