Wolf Hall meets The Favourite in this beguiling debut novel that brilliantly brings to life the residents of a small English town in the grip of the seventeenth-century witch trials and the young woman tasked with saving them all from themselves. "This is an intimate portrait of a clever if unworldly heroine who slides from amused observation of the 'moribund carnival atmosphere' in the household of a 'possessed' child to nervous uncertainty about the part in the proceedings played by her adored tutor to utter despair as a wagon carts her off to prison." —Alida Becker, The New York Times Book Review England, 1643. Puritanical fervor has gripped the nation. And in Manningtree, a town depleted of men since the wars began, the hot terror of damnation burns in the hearts of women left to their own devices. Rebecca West, fatherless and husbandless, chafes against the drudgery of her days, livened only occasionally by her infatuation with the handsome young clerk John Edes. But then a newcomer, who identifies himself as the Witchfinder General, arrives. A mysterious, pious figure dressed from head to toe in black, Matthew Hopkins takes over the Thorn Inn and begins to ask questions about what the women on the margins of this diminished community are up to. Dangerous rumors of covens, pacts, and bodily wants have begun to hang over women like Rebecca—and the future is as frightening as it is thrilling. Brimming with contemporary energy and resonance, The Manningtree Witches plunges its readers into the fever and menace of the English witch trials, where suspicion, mistrust, and betrayal run amok as a nation's arrogant male institutions start to realize that the very people they've suppressed for so long may be about to rise up and claim their freedom.

Sarah. Hagar. Rebekah. Leah. Rachel. Bilhah. Zilpah. These are the Matriarchs of Genesis. A people's self-understanding is fashioned on their heroes and heroines. Sarah, Rebekah, Leah, and Rachel--the traditional four Matriarchs--are important and powerful people in the book of Genesis. Each woman plays her part in her generation. She interacts with and advises her husband, seeking to achieve both present and future successes for her family. These women act decisively at crucial points; through their actions and words, their family dynamics change irrevocably. Unlike their husbands, we know little of their unspoken thoughts or actions. What the text in Genesis does share shows that these women are perceptive and judicious, often seeing the grand scheme with clarity. While their stories are told in Genesis, in the post-biblical world of the Pseudepigrapha, their stories are retold in new ways. The rabbis also speak of these women, and contemporary scholars and feminists continue to explore the Matriarchs in Genesis and later literature. Using extensive quotations, we present these women through five lenses: the Bible, Early Extra-Biblical Literature, Rabbinic Literature, Contemporary Scholarship, and Feminist Thought. In addition, we consider Hagar, Abraham's second wife and the mother of Ishmael, as well as Bilhah and Zilpah, Jacob's third and fourth wives.

Most studies of Judaism focus on sources produced by and for learned men - the Hebrew Bible, the Talmud, the Midrash, legal codes, and works of medieval philosophy, mysticism, and Hasidism. All these texts were written in Hebrew - a language seventeenth- through nineteenth-century Jewish women were not given the opportunity to learn. With Voices of the Matriarchs, Chava Weissler restores balance to our knowledge of Judaism by providing the first look at non-Hebrew Jewish source materials: the vernacular women's devotional prayers called tkhines. In Weissler's hands, these Yiddish prayers open a window into early modern Ashkenazic women's lives, beliefs, devotion, and relationships with God. In the last section of Voices of the Matriarchs Weissler looks at the changes the twentieth century wrought in the practice of writing and reciting tkhines.

As in most primate kinship circles, such as baboons, mothers are at the center of the circle. Sisters, daughters, brothers, and sons are further removed from mothers at the kinship core. Sons and brothers are in the next circle outside the mother's female kin. Fathers and adult males reside in the outer-most circle removed from mothers and their retinue. The peripheral males provide support and protection in return for mating privileges. This family geometry persists into the 21st Century. The central family core remains a matriarchy. The male patriarch, providing support and protection in exchange for mating rights, is usually separated from the core family.Over the last 2,500 years, patriarchs treated families as commodities.Families are consumers, houseworkers, wageworkers, people-producers, nurturers, and sex-workers. Economic need forces people to choose life as a commodity, to be bought and sold like sacks of potatoes. It amounts to coerced servitude in an increasingly sociopath global profit-economy.Radical contradictions in society are a prelude to upheaval. Consider the vast global imbalance of wealth. Super-wealthy Haves are 0.2% of all families; yet take possession of the world. Have-nots comprise 99.8% of all families. Have-nots, by their work, shopping, and consumption, create the wealth of the Haves. The super-wealthy are Takers, taking what they want. Takers devour and trash the Earth as they control it. Takers possess 99.8% of global wealth. Leavers are Have-nots who are left with the remains. How to boil a FROG (Inspired by the Story of B, by Daniel Quinn)Put a frog in a cauldron of warm water. As the water slowly heats, the frog remains still. The frog goes into a stupor, as we might in a warm bath. The frog will boil to death, while remaining in a stupor. This is a metaphor of the human condition. For 3-million years our ancestors were hunter-gatherers.Modern humans were around for 200,000 years. For 190,000 years we were hunter-gatherers, Leavers.Leavers satisfy daily needs and leave the rest.Leavers left Africa for the Middle East 50,000 years ago.The agricultural revolution began 10,000 years ago.The cauldron of humanity was comfortably warm. The last die-off was the great flood 13,000 years ago.Genesis tells of Cain the farmer and Abel the herder.Takers are farmers and herders, as in the 1800s American West.Takers grab land and eliminate competitors. The cauldron was slowly warming.Farmers need field labor and soldiers to secure their crops.More food leads to more people and more land grabbing.Takers expand without limit, overcoming all opposition.Amazon deforestation grazes cattle for cheap burgers. The cauldron was heating.Taker population grows faster than food availability.Takers believe in a God-given right to consume the world. They take what they want and leave their garbage.Cain and Abel warfare continues where it began. The cauldron is near boiling. Are we frogs too stupefied to save ourselves?
