Karen Petrone shatters the notion that World War I was a forgotten war in the Soviet Union. Although never officially commemorated, the Great War was the subject of a lively discourse about religion, heroism, violence, and patriotism during the interwar period. Using memoirs, literature, films, military histories, and archival materials, Petrone reconstructs Soviet ideas regarding the motivations for fighting, the justification for killing, the nature of the enemy, and the qualities of a hero. She reveals how some of these ideas undermined Soviet notions of military honor and patriotism while others reinforced them. As the political culture changed and war with Germany loomed during the Stalinist 1930s, internationalist voices were silenced and a nationalist view of Russian military heroism and patriotism prevailed.

In War S Dark Shadow written by W. Bruce Lincoln and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1994 with History categories.

The shadow of war that settled upon Russia's western frontier in 1914 darkened one of the most turbulent and exciting eras in Russian history. In War's Dark Shadow, W. Bruce Lincoln brilliantly tells the story of Russia's entry into the twentieth century. In a profoundly dramatic exploration, Lincoln portrays a vast empire on the eve of World War I: the relocation of hundreds of thousands of peasants from backward villages to wretched urban slums; the creation of a new class of wealthy industrialists; the swelling ranks of revolutionary terrorists; the brutal persecution of Jews in the most anti-Semitic society before Nazi Germany; and the birth of a revolutionary intelligentsia that created some of the most exciting and vibrant art Russia had ever produced. Based on voluminous first hand accounts taken from libraries and archives in St. Petersburg, Moscow, New York, London, Paris, and Helsinki, Lincoln creates a fascinating portrait of the enormous change and devastation that crushed Russian society from 1891 to 1914, making the Revolution of 1917 all but inevitable.

The Russian Army In The Great War written by David R. Stone and has been published by University Press of Kansas this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-07 with History categories.

A full century later, our picture of World War I remains one of wholesale, pointless slaughter in the trenches of the Western front. Expanding our focus to the Eastern front, as David R. Stone does in this masterly work, fundamentally alters—and clarifies—that picture. A thorough, and thoroughly readable, history of the Russian front during the First World War, this book corrects widespread misperceptions of the Russian Army and the war in the east even as it deepens and extends our understanding of the broader conflict. Of the four empires at war by the end of 1914—the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, German, and Russian—none survived. But specific political, social, and economic weaknesses shaped the way Russia collapsed and returned as a radically new Soviet regime. It is this context that Stone's work provides, that gives readers a more judicious view of Russia's war on the home front as well as on the front lines. One key and fateful difference in the Russian experience emerges here: its failure to systematically and comprehensively reorganize its society for war, while the three westernmost powers embarked on programs of total mobilization. Context is also vital to understanding the particular rhythm of the war in the east. Drawing on recent and newly available scholarship in Russian and in English, Stone offers a nuanced account of Russia's military operations, concentrating on the uninterrupted sequence of campaigns in the first 18 months of war. The eastern empires' race to collapse underlines the critical importance of contingency in the complete story of World War I. Precisely when and how Russia lost the war was influenced by the structural strengths and weaknesses of its social and economic system, but also by the outcome of events on the battlefield. By bringing these events into focus, and putting them into context, this book corrects and enriches our picture of World War I, and of the true strengths and weaknesses, triumphs and successes of the Russian Army in the Great War.

Excerpt from Russia and the Great War The success obtained with the British public by my work on "Modern Russia," of which the second edition followed the first in the space of ten months, has inspired me with courage once more to address my readers in a book devoted to my country. The subject of this new book is "Russia and the Great War." But in writing it I wished not merely to write a book for the moment exclusively, of value only for to-day, and of no interest to-morrow. It is not the external and dramatic aspect of the great war waged by Russia and her Allies that interests me the most. On the contrary, my readers will find in my pages neither descriptions of battles nor tragic or picturesque narratives of the incidents of battle. My aim has been something quite different from this. I wish to inform my English readers concerning the principal phenomena of Russian life before the war, and to explain the relations between these phenomena and the war itself.
