This publication of survivor testimonies from Asia Minor and Pontos in English is the largest effort by the Asia Minor and Pontos Hellenic Research Center, Inc. (AMPHRC), a non-profit organization founded in 2011 in Chicago, IL. The source of selected surviror testimonies is the five volumes printed in Greek by The Center of Asia Minor Studies (CMS), Athens, Greece that was a major undertaking starting in 1930 and lasting about 30 years. The survivor testimonies play a crucial role in understanding what occurred before, during and after the Great Catastrophe. As Prof. Paul Bartrop has noted: Testimonial accounts, by virtue of their special status as first hand narratives written by peiple who lived through barbaric treatment at the hands of their persecutors, are our primary link to the perpetrators as viewed from the victims' perspective. As such, all accounts are vitally important documents which must be considered and respected as historical data. The view put in this paper is that there is merit in every survivor account, and that we therefore need to examine how testimonies may be asserssed as sources of history.

The mass killing of Ottoman Armenians is today widely recognized, both within and outside scholarly circles, as an act of genocide. This book examines British responses to genocide and atrocity in the Ottoman Empire during the aftermath of World War I. The authors analyze British humanitarianism and humanitarian intervention through the advice and policies of the Foreign Office and British government in London and the actions of Foreign Officers in the field. British understandings of humanitarianism at the time revolved around three key elements: good government, atrocity, and the refugee crises; this ideology of humanitarianism, however, was challenged by disputed policies of post-war politics and goals regarding the Near East. This resulted in limited intervention methods available to those on the ground but did not necessarily result in the forfeiture of the belief in humanitarianism amongst the local British officials charged with upholding it. This study shows that the tension between altruism and political gain weakened British power in the region, influencing the continuation of violence and repression long after the date most perceive as the cessation of WWI. The book is primarily aimed at scholars and researchers within the field; it is a research monograph and will be of greatest interest to scholars of genocide, British history, and refugee studies, as well as for activists and practitioners.
