This is a book about the history of the science of inertia. Nobody denies the existence of the forces of inertia, but they are branded as OC fictitiousOCO because they do not fit smoothly into modern physics. Named by Kepler and given mathematical form by Newton, the force of inertia remains aloof because it has no obvious local cause. At the end of the 19th century, Ernst Mach bravely claimed that the inertia of an object was the result of its instantaneous interaction with all matter in the universe. Many other well-known physicists, including Aristotle, Galileo, Descartes and Einstein, are shown to have tackled this difficult subject. The book also concentrates on inertia research in the 20th century, taking place under the shadow of general relativity, which is seen as uncomfortable with Mach''s principle. A simple explanation of gravity relates to the Higgs mechanism and the Pauli exclusion principle. By the latter, matter cannot occupy the same space other matter occupies, but light energy superimposes to be nearly invisible to other light. By the Higgs mechanism, light energy converts to matter. By its interaction, matter also converts back to light energy. Light speed is also slower in a gravitational field. There is thus a positive field of energy maintaining matter that emits light energy for a vacuum effect consistent with the inverse square law. As a recycling effect, it is also consistent with Einstein's cosmological constant and the cosmological principle of the big bang theory. Tired light is also included for dark energy whereby the Hubble Constant divided by light speed equates the ratio of gravitational force to electromagnetic force.

The aim of the GRIP experiment is to investigate how gravity impacts the kinematics and dynamics of the upper limb during dexterous manipulation of objects and how the central nervous system adapts to long-term exposure to microgravity and subsequently back to Earth gravity. Hence, we proposed to conduct a set of experiments on healthy human subjects, involving the manipulation of an instrumented object during exposure to normal and microgravity, and to study how the central nervous system adapts motor control in order to cope with the new physical environment. More particularly, the coordination between the grasping force (or grip force, GF) and the load force (LF) is studied, as well as the adaptation of the movement dynamics and kinematics and the interaction between cognitive and sensory cues that establish a reference frame for the human brain. Here we describe the background motivation, the parabolic flight tests that initiated the scientific hypotheses and the technical and scientific process that led to the implementation of the GRIP experiment currently on board the International Space Station (ISS).
