GSM, GPRS and EDGE Performance - Second Edition provides a complete overview of the entire GSM system. GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) is the digital transmission technique widely adopted in Europe and supported in North America. It features comprehensive descriptions of GSM’s main evolutionary milestones - GPRS, (General Packet Radio Services) is a packet-based wireless communication service that promises data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone and computer users. AMR and EDGE (Enhanced Data GSM Environment), and such developments have now positioned GERAN (GSM/EDGE Radio Access Network) as a full 3G radio standard. The radio network performance and capabilities of GSM, GPRS, AMR and EDGE solutions are studied in-depth by using revealing simulations and field trials. Cellular operators must now roll out new 3G technologies capable of delivering wireless Internet based multimedia services in a competitive and cost-effective way and this volume, divided into three parts, helps to explain how: 1. Provides an introduction to the complete evolution of GSM towards a radio access network that efficiently supports UMTS services (GERAN). 2. Features a comprehensive study of system performance with simulations and field trials. Covers all the major features such as basic GSM, GPRS, EDGE and AMR and the full capability of the GERAN radio interface for 3G service support is envisaged. 3. Discusses different 3G radio technologies and the position of GERAN within such technologies. Featuring fully revised and updated chapters throughout, the second edition contains 90 pages of new material and features the following new sections, enabling this reference to remain as a leading text in the area: Expanded material on GPRS Includes IMS architecture (Rel’5) and GERAN (Rel’6) features Presents field trial results for AMR and narrowband Provides EGPRS deployment guidelines Features a new chapter on Service Performance An invaluable reference for Engineering Professionals, Research and Development Engineers, Business Development Managers, Technical Managers and Technical Specialists working for cellular operators

The Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) is undoubtedly the most successful second generation digital mobile radio system. One of the key factors for this exceptional performance is the constant evolution of the GSM systems and its derivatives DCS-1800 and PCS-1900. The objective of the book is to address new concepts in the GSM system, dealing with both standardised features as well as theoretically and technologically feasible improvements, which contribute to evolutionary changes in general. Dynamic evolution of GSM presents a platform for the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) introduction and major trends in UMTS development will be addressed in this book, in particular progress towards new radio interface. The book is the collection of individual contributions from a number of authors. The intention of the editors was to gather the most prominent specialist in the GSM area. Ongoing efforts in GSM standardisation are focused on Phase 2+ with items planned to be added gradually on demand. Being mostly independent of each other, each of them could be introduced with little impact on the rest of the system. Speech remains the prime service of cellular systems with ongoing work on spectral efficiency taking into account the trade-off between cost of the system and transmission quality. Most notable result from novel speech service implementations is the introduction of new Enhanced Full Rate (EFR) speech coder. International railway organisation (Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer - UIC) has influenced the development of Advanced Speech Call Items (ASCI).

Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Engineering - Communication Technology, grade: 1,3, Reutlingen University (Production Management), course: Advanced Communications, language: English, abstract: Since the beginning of the 1990s the mobile telecommunication sector to mention the cellular communication services has continued to grow and evolved strongly. The reason for such an unprecedented level of development was possible with the existence of the so-called second generation digital technologies, with GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) being one of the most popular systems. In fact these second generation digital technologies, which are generally incompatible with each other, went eventually through standardization processes since the beginning of the 1980s reaching their limits of possibilities by now. In order to be able to offer new services and to provide users with real mobility on a global scale, it has become essential to augment the technology and elevate the threshold to the so-called third generation technology. The following paper will first provide a short but more thorough historical overview of the developments in the cellular communication services. The second part will be exemplifying the technology behind GSM. In this part, the paper will first address the technologies used to provide wireless voice and data services to subscribers commonly referred to as multiplexing. Followed by examining the structure of the GSM net-work itself. The last main part will focus on the third generation technology by showcasing the widely used Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS). This part will not only introduce the technology by looking at the architecture in detail, but also determine some of the differences to the GSM technology and address the overall advantages. Finally, the paper will be summarized.

GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) provides a service to more than 500 million users throughout 168 countries worldwide. It is the world market leader serving 69 % of all mobile digital users and is currently evolving into UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System). By describing the critical decisions and the phases of the development this key text explains how the GSM initiative became a success in Europe and how it evolved to the global mobile communication system. Initially the strategy and technical specifications were agreed for Europe and the subsequent evolution to a global solution was achieved by incorporating all non-European requirements and by inviting all committed parties worldwide to participate. The process started in 1982 and the first GSM networks went into commercial service in 1992. The first UMTS networks are expected in 2002 and the fourth generation discussions have begun. * Presents a complete technical history of the development of GSM and the early evolution to UMTS * Clarifies the creation of the initial GSM second generation system in CEPT GSM, the evolution to a generation 2.5 system in ETSI SMG and the evolution to the Third Generation (UMTS) in ETSI SMG and 3GPP * Covers all of the services and system features together with the working methods and organisational aspects GSM and UMTS provides an interesting and informative read and will appeal to everyone involved in the mobile communications market needing to know how GSM and UMTS technologies evolved. The accompanying CD-ROM provides nearly 500 reference documents including reports of all standardisation plenary meetings, strategy documents, key decisions, the GSM Memorandum of Understanding and the report of the UMTS Task Force.

2G/GSM and 3G/UMTS are key mobile communication technologies, chosen by more than 2 billion people around the world. In order to adapt to new services, increasing demand for user bandwidth, quality of service and requirements for network convergence, major evolutions are introduced in 3G network standard. Evolved Packet System (EPS) presents the EPS evolution of the 3G/UMTS standard introduced by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) standard committee. This new topic is looked at from a system perspective, from the radio interface to network and service architecture. Hundreds of documents being issued by Standard organisations are summarised in one book to allow the reader to get an accessible comprehensive view of EPS evolution. Proposes a system view of Evolved UMTS, from the radio to Core and service architecture Gives a comprehensive and global view of the system that technical specifications do not provide Describes the new system as well as the inheritance and migration from 2G/GSM and 3G/UMTS Written by experts in the field who specialise in two complementary but very different technical domains (i.e. "radio interface" and "network architecture") Contains many figures and examples for better understanding. This book is essential for industry professionals in the telecommunication business, telecommunication system architects and designers, product manufacturers and operators and postgraduate students.
