In this volume, marine experts describe the principal components of the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem. They include observations on human induced stress on the system and mitigating actions underway to improve the prospects for achieving greater long-term socioeconomic benefits from the ecosystem. The natural resources of the Gulf are important to the economy of the coastal border states of the United States and Mexico. Of particular importance to the coastal population centers are the fish and fisheries resources, recreational facilities, offshore oil production, and the wide diversity of fish, bird, and mammal species. Among the problems reviewed in the volume are the increasing incidence and extent of harmful algal blooms, oxygen depletion events, pollution hot-spots, loss of wetlands, and losses of fishery productivity and yield through overexploitation and by-catch discards.

The Gulf of Guinea volume is part of a series on the Large Marine Ecosystems. This volume combines the latest research on the Gulf of Guinea from scientists working primarily in the region and from Europe. It covers the dynamics of the oceanic and coastal waters of the region, the major biological resources, pollution in the marine environment and the socio-economics and governance of marine fisheries. A significant number of new data sets, including some which have been repatriated from outside the region, are now made available through this publication. The combination of the various chapters underlines the interlinkages that exist between the interannual and seasonal dynamical behaviour of the oceanic offshore waters and the living marine resources along the coast, and the direct effect they have on the livelihoods of the populations living throughout the Gulf of Guinea. The volume is intended for those who have a general interest in the region as well as those who work professionally in the field. It will also be of immense value to resource managers and policy-makers as a demonstration project on how research can help solve the pressing problems of economic and food security in coastal regions.

This is the first book to provide assessments of multidecadal changes in resources and environments of the Large Marine Ecosystems (LMEs) of the North Atlantic. Using the case study method, researchers examine the forces driving the changes and actions underway aimed at turning the corner from declining trends in biomass yields, toward recovery of depleted species populations and improvements in ecosystem integrity. Recently a distinguished group of 24 scientists argued eloquently that a new Sustainability Science was emerging that was focused on "meeting fundamental human needs while preserving the life support systems of planet Earth". The contributions contained in this volume are at the cutting edge of Sustainability Science and the results presented by the contributors are pertinent to one of the core questions: "How are long-term trends in environment and development, including consumption and population, reshaping nature-society interactions in ways relevant to sustainability?" (Science Vol. 292, 27 April 2001). The case studies demonstrate the utility of an ecosystem-based approach to the assessment and management of biomass yields and species sustainability. Movements toward ecosystem-based management have emerged from the case studies on the initiation of recoveries of several depleted groundfish stocks of the US Northeast Shelf LME; the collapse of the Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf cod; the assessment of physical and biological changes on the Scotian Shelf, West Greenland Shelf, Iceland Shelf LME, and the Faroe Plateau, the North Sea, and the Barents Sea LMEs. Uncertainties, with regard to environmental and human-generated forcing, are addressed in assessment of the states of the Iberian Coastal and Biscay-Celtic LMEs, and in broad-scale studies of the influences at the base of the food chain of climatic variability on the productivity and biodiversity of plankton communities of the North Atlantic. The volume concludes with an insightful perspective on the approaches used and the results reported by the eminent marine scientist and former President of ICES, Professor Gotthilf Hempel.

"The goal of this report is to summarize the various focal ecosystem components in the Gulf of Mexico necessary to consider from an ecosystem perspective. The report highlights potential indicators that could be used to track these focal ecosystem components. Broadly following the DPSER framework, selected indicators span a wide range of ecosystem components, from climatic and physical drivers of ecosystem change, to the states of biological and human communities. The intention of the work is to cover the entire Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem, including U.S., Mexican, and Cuban waters. However, due to the difficulty in obtaining data from Cuba, only remotely sensed observations are available for this report from this section of the Gulf. Where possible, we have developed indicators based on the Southern Gulf of Mexico using Mexican data sources, but much of the information in the report is weighted heavily towards the Northern Gulf of Mexico. We expect that this interdisciplinary report will serve to elucidate linkages not only between these geographical regions, but also between different components of the Gulf of Mexico Large Marine Ecosystem, and that it will provide context as we move toward ecosystem-based management of this ecosystem"--Introduction.

Environmental monitoring in the Gulf of Mexico poses extensive challenges and significant opportunities. Multiple jurisdictions manage this biogeographically and culturally diverse region, whose monitoring programs tend to be project-specific by design and funding. As a result, these programs form more of a monitoring patchwork then a network. At the same time, the Gulf monitoring community faces a unique opportunity to organize and think differently about monitoring - including how best to allocate and manage the resources for this large marine ecosystem and its communities - as a result of the infusion of resources for environmental restoration and related activities after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Opportunities for the Gulf Research Program: Monitoring Ecosystem Restoration and Deep Water Environments summarizes a Gulf Research Program workshop held on September 3-4, 2014 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The workshop gathered about 40 participants from the energy industry, state and federal government, academia, and nongovernmental organizations to examine two broad issues that were seen as time-sensitive opportunities in light of significant investments in the Gulf for restoration and accelerating development of energy resources in the deep Gulf: monitoring ecosystem restoration and deep water environments. As participants explored potential opportunities for the Program to consider, they noted the essential role that communication and outreach play in successful monitoring, and the importance of applying an ecosystem service approach to monitoring, forging partnerships among stakeholders, and supporting efforts to organize and manage monitoring data.
