Book may have numerous typos, missing text, images, or index. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. 1891. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XIV.' A GYPSY MAGIC SPELL. HOKKANI BASO LELLIN DUDIKABIN, OR THE GREAT SECRET CHILDREN'S RHYMES AND INCANTATIONS TEN LITTLE INDIAN BOYS AND TEN LITTLE ACORN GIRLS OF MARCELLUS BURDI- GALENSIS. HERE is a meaningless rhyme very common among children. It is repeated while "counting off" --or "out" --those who are taking part in a game, and allotting to each a place. There are many versions of it, but the following is exactly word for word what I learned when a boy in Philadelphia: -- Ekkeri (or ickery), akkery, u-kcry an, Fillisi', follasy, Nicholas John, Queebee - quabee -- Irishman (or, Irish Mary), Stingle 'em--stangle 'em--buck! With a very little alteration This chapter is reproduced, but with much addition, from one in my work entitled "The Gypsies," published in Boston, 1881, by Houghton and Mifflin. London: Trubner Sc Co. The addition will be the most interesting portion to the folk-lorist. in sounds, and not more than children make of these verses in different places, this may be read as follows: -- Ek-keri (yekori) akairi, you kair an, Fillissin, follasy, Nakelas jan Kivi, kavi--Irishman, Stini, stani--buck! This is, of course, nonsense, but it is Romany or gypsy nonsense, and it may be thus translated very accurately: -- First--here--you begin! Castle, gloves. You don't play! Go on! Kivi--a kettle. How are you? Stdni, buck. The common version of the rhyme begins with-- "One--ery--two--ery, ickery an." But one-ery is an exact translation of ek-keri; ek, or yek, meaning one in gypsy. (Ek-orus, or yek-korus, means once). And it is remarkable that in-- "Hickory dickory dock, The rat ran up the clock, The clock struck one, And down he run, Hickory dickory dock." We have hickory, or ek-keri, again followed by a significant one. It may be observed that while my firs...

I have authored a new book; The Devil's Gipsies, this book is based on one of my granddads wonderful Gypsie tales. My granddad, Oliver Scarrott Brinkley Smith, a True Romany Gypsie, featured in my first book "Romany Gypsies" (my childhood life story) available on Amazon. This new book is titled The Devil's Gipsies, the book tells the tale of devil worship, demons, witches, Gypsies, Blood Sacrifice, Abduction. Plus, the investigation into the occult by the British Secret Intelligence Service, Mi5, just before the 2nd World War, around 1938. The book features real family members from that time. A bit of horror mystery and suspense. I have had to keep the language and any sassy bits down, as my granddaughters, grandsons, family members and friends represented characters in this book The book has over seventy photos to compliment the story, Devil, Demons and Witches. There are Photos of the characters in the story, plus image's relating to the tale. Family and friends may see a likeness to themselves and recognize other family members from these photos. Around 1948 Major Writtle, a central character in this story, had his briefcase containing the photos and documents featured in this book, forwarded to my granddad for safe keeping after his demise. My mother Kezia, who plays a pivotal role in this story, would not talk about it. She never knew, granddad had given me Major Writtle's old briefcase, containing the photos and documents. I do not claim this story to be true, it's probably, nothing more than a Gypsy tale, I hope you enjoy the photos and this Gypsie tale. Make of it as you will. Lenny Harvey

This novel is fun and entertains, but at the same time it teaches general culture and history. "The gypsy devil" takes you to dates back to in the 18th century in the northern New Spain, with a fiction that uses reality to create a credible atmosphere. From the beginning, the plot points to murders linked to witchcraft which are investigated by the Holy Inquisition. The story is associated to a group of gypsies and a bureaucrat who is the main character, who is involved in dark criminal circumstances that accuse gypsy women. The arrival of the gypsies in America occurs on a journey with pirates, who have a twisted sense of loyalty and honor, but who respect the courage and way of fighting of the gypsies, who are famous for fighting hand-to-hand with knives At that time, the pirates had an unwritten code that allowed them to make long voyages and avoid mutinies with sadistic and ingenious punishments, but the most difficult thing for a pirate ship was to sail with hundreds of rats for months, which caused illnesses. that killed those who boarded those boats. In the New Spain, the gypsies, who are nomadic by nature, traveled north where they suffered multiple misadventures, facing highwaymen and cursed beings of the night; but the worst misfortune was that without being guilty they suffered the persecution and torture of the Inquisition. At that time, murders in small northern towns increased, all of them revealed diabolical or witchcraft circumstances that terrified the population, which is why a Special Commissary of the Holy Office of the Inquisition was appointed to put an end to the devil in that region. By chance of fate, the Villa de Monclova Notary Public is rescued by several gypsy women. Despite being a man with conservative values, he is seduced by the feminine charm that breaks his preconceived ideas of morality. From that moment on, he will protect them with cunning actions to evade the authorities on the one hand, and the devil on the other. Actually, the hidden story in the novel is represented by the myth of Lilith: the woman as man's downfall, the devil made woman. Lilith is a female demon predecessor of Eve, she has been excluded from celestial glory due to her sexual promiscuity with Lucifer and inferior demons. While gypsy women are the representation of desire, but not of evil; the protagonist is a kind of Adam who acts in full control of his acts and desires, induced to act with carnal vehemence but tinged with loving emotion. The curtain rises when, in the midst of a meticulous inquisitorial torture procedure, the devil shows up to rescue a real witch who implored his help, and the antagonist is once again a woman. Lilith is an entity that is male and female. Lilith is androgynous, she is a woman, but with the ability to become a man, why not her? She is the antithesis of God. The idea that is sent to the reader is clear, the devil has no sex. The devil shows his cards, favoring a slave by taking her with him, always waiting for a better moment to transform humans into animals of the night, thirsty for blood and rotting meat. Between the cursed beings and the incompetent authorities, the Notary and his gypsies will form a secret group dedicated to preparing to persecute and destroy anyone who becomes a slave to the devil's murderous bloodlust. Awards of "the gypsy devil" Winner of the Rosario Castellanos National short novel award; Honorable Mention as a novel fragment in the starting point award, and Honorable Mention in the Creatures of the Night award.

A comprehensive A-to-Z reconstruction of the oral tradition of the Rom--gypsies--based on sources never before available in English • Presents the origin myths and magical traditions of the gypsies, including their legendary ties to Egypt, animal ancestors, and tree spirits • Examines the three major settings of gypsy folktales--the forest, the waters, and the mountain--and shows how their world is full of spirits • Shows how the religious concepts of the Rom testify to a profound syncretism of the pagan traditions and Christianity Although their own myths and their common name point to Egyptian origins for the gypsies, the Rom, as they call themselves, originated in India, as evidenced by studies of their language. They arrived in Europe in the ninth century and spread across the continent from East to West, reaching England in the 15th century and Scandinavia by the end of the 16th century. A nomadic people, these wanderers were reviled by local populaces wherever they went and regarded as misfits, intruders, foreigners, and thieves. Drawing on a number of sources never before available outside of Eastern Europe, Claude Lecouteux reconstructs the gypsy oral tradition to provide a comprehensive A-to-Z look at gypsy mythology, including their folktales, rites, songs, nursery rhymes, jokes, and magical traditions. His main source is material collected by Heinrich Adalbert von Wlislocki (1856-1907), an ethnologist who lived with gypsies in Romania, Transylvania, and Hungary in the latter half of the 19th century. He presents the origin myths of the gypsies, legends which form the ancestral memory of the gypsy tribes and often closely touch on their daily life. Lecouteux explores the full range of supernatural beings that inhabit the gypsy world, including fairies, undines, ogres, giants, dog-people, and demons, and he examines the three major settings of gypsy folktales--the forest, the waters, and the mountain, which they worshiped as a sacred being in its own right. He also reveals how coexisting with peoples of different religions led the gypsies to adapt or borrow stories and figures from these groups, and he shows how the religious concepts and sacred stories of the Rom testify to a profound syncretism of pagan traditions and Christianity. Complete with rare illustrations and information from obscure sources appearing for the first time in English, this detailed reference work represents an excellent resource for scholars and those seeking to reconnect to their forgotten gypsy heritage.
