In the early 1990s, Bill Lyon (who twice stood as an Australian Labor Party candidate for election to the Western Australian parliament) adopted the persona of 'Sir Bruce Fernargle-Jones' in order to provide satirical commentary on local, national and international politics from the 'inside', so to speak. In his weekly radio broadcasts on the Australian Broadcasting Commission, he turned a humorous, knowledgeable and sceptical eye on the foolishnesses, foibles, failings, faults and frailties of prime ministers, premiers and presidents as well as many others of greater or lesser significance - questionable businessmen, trendy fashionista, errant Royalty - as well as on passing social issues and mores. This book gathers together for the first time the scripts Lyon prepared for the broadcasts he made late at night, which originated in Perth but which were relayed throughout Australia. The Chinese curse, 'May you live in interesting times', although probably bogus, seems nonetheless to have been visited upon Sir Bruce Fernargle-Jones, and his perspective upon those 'interesting times' provided the substance of the commentaries reproduced in this book. Together they represent a comic time capsule of the twists and turns - and occasional lunacies - of Australian (and sometimes international) politics and society during a stimulating era.In addition to Sir Bruce's talks, the book contains material 'drawn from the archives of the Rottnest Island Film Commission' of which fictional organisation Sir Bruce Fernargle-Jones was the fictional chairman (a 'fact' to which he often refers in his broadcasts). This material mainly consists of radio and television scripts for comedy programs based on the idea of the incompetent operations of the said Rottnest Island Film Commission - scripts that were written by Bill Lyon and Neil Rattigan a decade earlier than the Sir Bruce broadcasts but from which he arose like a middle-aged, paunchy, self-opinionated Botticelli Venus. There are also reproduced some related correspondence, memoranda and assorted trivia.

In the days when Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee faced each other in the House of Commons, there was disagreement about whose hands should be on the Mace, the symbol of power at Westminster. Everyone assumed that the hands on the Mace would be British. In the past half century, the Prime Minister's power at Westminster has increased greatly, but it has diminished in the worlds beyond. In Westminster, the Prime Minister is now first without equal. But in councils of the European Union, he or she is only one among fifteen national leaders. In a shrinking world the chief issues facing Downing Street today are 'intermestic', an amalgam of domestic politics and international concerns. Tony Blair may say that he is batting for Britain, but cricket skills are no match for an American president playing hard ball, and policy-making in the European Union is definitely not cricket. In an era of television politics, the faces and voices of Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair are familiar to every voter, and the press cooperates in turning politicians into media celebrities. But what you see on the box is politics; it has little to do with the policies of British government. Old-school leaders such as Harold Macmillan devoted as much time to policy as to politics. But new-style prime ministers put politics first. Tony Blair wants to speak for all the British people, but the result is 'managed populism', for his voice travels down a one-way street. In Whitehall, Blair's Third Way blunts the cutting edge of policy, leaving officials puzzled about what to do when hard choices arise, especially about Europe. Anyone interested in politics and current affairs, whether a student or a thoughtful reader and viewer, will find insight and illumination in a book that draws on the author's unrivalled first-hand knowledge of British politics over the past half century. Richard Rose's work has been recognized by a lifetime achievement award from the Political Studies Association. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and director of the Centre for the Study of Public Policy at the University of Strathclyde.

Goh Chok Tong was an improbable Prime Minister for an unlikely country. He had neither the connections nor the cunning to rise to the top, and was even once famously derided by his mentor Lee Kuan Yew for being "wooden" in his communication skills. Except for an imposing height most unusual in this part of the world, he was an ordinary man. He lost his father at a young age, lived in a two-bedroom public flat with his mother and four siblings and needed a government bursary to complete university. Yet somehow he succeeded. Tall Order tells the extraordinary story of his life and career over half a century, revealing how Singapore's second Prime Minister rose through a combination of strength, wit and a political nous which many, including himself, did not know he had. In this first of two volumes, Goh navigated years of a challenging apprenticeship to Lee, scoring numerous policy successes but also suffering political blows and humiliation. He was the man who first made Neptune Orient Lines, Singapore's national carrier, profitable, before entering politics. The stellar corporate stint was followed by his many novel policies and institutions that have since become household names in the country: Medisave, Total Defence, Residents' Committee and Nominated Member of Parliament. But the highlights were counterposed by setbacks, including overseeing the People's Action Party's first electoral defeat after independence at the Anson by-election. In the hands of acclaimed author and journalist Peh Shing Huei, this authorised biography reveals the private deliberations and negotiations between Goh and Lee before the maiden leadership transfer of independent Singapore. Tall Order is the first biography of Goh. This riveting book offers rare insights into Singapore's biggest and most important political and economic stories.

Prime Ministers and Some Others By George W.E. Russell coil might injure their colleagues. But Lord Russell has never bowed the knee to the potentates of the Press; he has offered no sacrifice of invitations to social editors; and social editors have accordingly failed to discover the merits of a statesman who so little appreciated them, until they have almost made the nation forget the services that Lord Russell has so faithfully and courageously rendered." Of Lord Russell's political consistency I have already spoken; and it was most conspicuously displayed in his lifelong zeal for the extension of the suffrage. He had begun his political activities by a successful attack on the rottenest of rotten boroughs; the enfranchisement of the Middle Class was the triumph of his middle life. As years advanced his zeal showed no abatement; again and again he returned to the charge, though amidst the most discouraging circumstances; and when, in his old age, he became Prime Minister for the second time, the first task to which he set his hand was so to extend the suffr We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
