This book is written by Charles Dickens. In the first volume of the story, we're introduced to John, the narrator, and his sister Patty, who go to live in the house that's the subject of the tale. The house is ''a solitary house, standing in a sadly neglected garden, '' described as stiff, cold, and formal. It is known to be haunted; in particular, bells ring without provocation and one of the siblings' servants observes ''Eyes'' at the residence. The siblings decide to release all their servants (save Bottles, a deaf stableman) and live in the house by themselves. Patty has an idea to invite seven friends to the house to ''form a Society here for three months'' and observe the ghostly happenings around the home. Indeed, in November, friends begin arriving at the house and draw straws to see who gets what room. From these visitors, we get the remaining volumes in ''The Haunted House.'

Known as one of the key figures in the 'weird' horror movement that arose in England and the United States in the early twentieth century, Algernon Blackwood was known for inserting surprising, often sophisticated twists into his tales. The Damned tells the story of a haunted house whose supernatural activity stems from an unlikely source. This is one of those books that gets hurt by modern horror writing. The atmosphere is creepy and there is a constant sense of dread throughout. You constantly expect something horrible to happen, and it never really does. A lot of reviewers on this site have used that as a criticism. They say nothing really happens, which was exactly the point of the book, even going so far as being explicitly stated. This book was written in 1914 and is one of the great, original haunted house stories. I highly recommend it for horror literature lovers. Blackwood is a legend within the genre and inspired countless writers, including H.P. Lovecraft and Caitlin Kiernan.

An interesting concept for an anthology of short stories, very unique! The introduction and setting of the Haunted House was creepy and funny, and created a vivid atmosphere for the stories, so that though they were extremely varied, they always hand an air of mystery, as well as a bridge between their widely differing genres and styles. The ending of the book fell a bit flat for me though, since the ghostly activity from the beginning of the book was never sufficiently resolved, and just seemed to vanish in the end without reason; instead, two couples got married and the author talked about the Bible. Maybe this made sense as a convention of literature at the time it was written, maybe to make it a happy ending or something, but at present, it threw an anticlimax at the end of a book that was really good and engaging in all other aspects. Aside from that, this book was highly entertaining and extremely memorable. The stories themselves are haunting and will stick with me for sometime to come! This is most definitely a book worth reading!

Henry James' The Turn of the Screw has frightened and enchanted readers for generations thanks to its unreliable narrator and unnerving ambiguity. It has been the chilling inspiration for multiple feature films and, most recently, the Netflix horror series "The Haunting of Bly Manor," a follow-up to "The Haunting of Hill House."An imaginative young woman moves to Bly to take care of the two strange children living there, but this house is haunted by more than just its occupants' secrets....The story is presented here with a brief synopsis for each chapter to guide modern readers through James' opaque prose.

Dr. Montague decides it's time science proved the existence of the supernatural and that Hill House, a mansion with a pretty haunted history, is the place to prove it. His experiment will only consist of the most rigorous science and indisputable evidence. Translation: he's going to live at Hill House for a summer Ghost Hunter-style and see what happens. Sounds legit, we guess. Dr. Montague sends a volley of letters in hopes of snatching up some lab rats--sorry, assistants; he refers to them as assistants. Only two people respond: socially repressed Eleanor Vance and emotional livewire Theodora. The current owner of Hill House convinces Dr. Montague to take her nephew, Luke, off her hands for a while. That makes four. Eleanor Vance goes to Hill House against her family's wishes, which requires a bit of grand theft auto on her part. She initially regrets coming to a place of such doom and gloom but perks up when Theodora arrives. The two become instant BFFs. Then they meet Dr. Montague and Luke, and, wouldn't you know, everyone gets along fabulously. During the first night of the epic slumber party, Dr. Montague informs his three assistants of Hill House's terrifically terrifying past. We are sad to admit that it lacks ghosts, ghouls, or curses from lands most ancient. There was a suicide, though, and some pneumonia, and plenty of family bickering over the good china. The four settle in over the next few days, and Hill House stretches its supernatural muscles. Strange happenings occur: bangs echo up and down the hallway, doors slam shut for no obvious reason, and messages appear across the hall walls. The House even goes all animal-rights activist and throws blood on Theodora's clothes. Eleanor seems particularly vulnerable to Hill House's ways. She experiences all the manifestations the others do--and a few special ones meant just for her. Although harrowing, the experiences excite and enthrall Eleanor, who feels her life has been wasted up until her time here. Her bond with the house strengthens.

A popular phenomenon since antiquity, the image of the haunted house is one that has translated elegantly into the modern medium of film. The haunted house transcends genre, appearing in mysteries, gothic romances, comedies and horror films. This book is the first comprehensive historical and critical study of themes surrounding haunted houses in film. Covering more than 100 films, it spans from the Mystery House thrillers of the silent era to the high-tech, big budget productions of the 21st Century. Included are the works of such acclaimed directors as D.W. Griffith, Robert Wise, Mario Bava, Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton and Guillermo Del Toro. The book also covers the real-life "haunted house" phenomenon and movies based on paranormal case files, including those featured in films like the Conjuring series.
