Mobile phone use in the United States has risen dramatically over the last 20 years, and Americans increasingly rely on mobile phones as their sole or primary means of telephone communication. The rapid adoption of mobile phones has occurred amidst controversy over whether the technology poses a risk to human health. Like other devices that transmit radio signals, mobile phones emit radio-frequency (RF) energy. At high power levels, RF energy can heat biological tissue and cause damage. Though mobile phones operate at power levels well below the level at which this thermal effect occurs, the question of whether long-term exposure to RF energy emitted from mobile phones can cause other types of adverse health effects, such as cancer, has been the subject of research and debate. Background Due to the rapid increase in mobile phone use there are concerns about whether the electromagnetic radiation used for wireless data transmission by this technology might have harmful effects on human health. Aim To find out whether these concerns are justified. Methods I consider the important basics of mobile phones. Then, I discuss possible health effects of mobile phone radiation regarding their harmfulness. I have a look at the trustworthiness of present studies by taking into account their results and limitations. The precautions that are taken to reduce people's exposure are discussed. This includes exposure limits, shielding and avoiding exposure. I do measurements to evaluate the effectiveness of shielding. I also do recordings of exposure to mobile phone radiation during several days. This gives an idea what the levels of exposure are in everyday life. Finally, the insights out of these measurements are put into relation with the results of the studies and with the precautions. Results Overall, the studies deny a genuine harmful effect of mobile phone radiation, in the case of cancer as well as with other symptoms. Secondly the measured levels of radiation were very low, and I was also able to proof that mobiles only emit radiation when necessary. Finally, I found out that exposure is by far highest next to the mobile. The self-inflicted exposure, which everyone can control themselves, is therefore highest. Conclusion This all leads to the conclusion that we should not worry about the health effects of mobile phone radiation.
